Annoying fertilizer questions for Trichocereus/Pereskiopsis

I've done a bit of reading on the subject of Trichocereus fertilization and it seems like everybody is pretty conflicted so I figure I'll just be annoying and ask you guys direcly.

What do you think is the best for fertilizing your trichs? I live in zone 6, the colder one (can't remember if a/b) so my trichs (according to googles first/last frost dates) can be outside from the first week of may to the middle of october or so, maybe earlier/later once they are larger.
I would like them to pick up the fastest growth in this time span as possible, because I'm a greedy noob I guess.
I have purchased Shultz cactus fertilizer which is 2-7-7 if I remember. I was also considering purchasing a little tub of 20-20-20 which was just a standard plant food and using a very small amount of that every so often
Lots of people say trichs can handle a lot more N than most cactus

What would mixing these two come out to? 6-12-12ish? Does that seem a little better?

Would things like bone meal and other organic nutes still be beneficial or should I choose one or the other?

Edit because I also want to know about fertilizing Pereskiopsis.

I play everything by ear. Nothing is set in stone. Feed them whatever you like. They will speak to you in time. Dont be so quick to do things. Alot of people grow under lights and thats good for the winter.

Now to your questions. I place a fertilizer spike in each pot. Its a spike for fruits and vegetables. I dont really have a time table of when to water you just got to be spontaneous. Dont over think things man. I used to do it and kill things constantly. I killed so many lophs in that way.

If your unsure water once a month. Thats a stretch to what most people do. Ive honed my skills and kill cacti less this year as other years.

I feel like I've got watering down pretty well. I got some seedlings from MusicLover over a month ago and I haven't killed any of them yet, I let them dry out and shrink a bit before I water them. I've also been changing their pots around way way too frequently

They're tough little fuckers. I'm not worried about killing them I just want the most aggressive, thick, fastest growth because I'm greedy!

I managed to pick up some limestone screenings for my lophs but I still need some sort of granite fines, I'm on my way to joining the revolution

To answer your question, if you mix your ferts in equal quantities the combined result would be a 11-13.5-13.5. I give my guys a low N, higher P and K fert about every third watering.  I also give a bit of Epsom salts (MgSO4)a couple of times each season - Mg is essential for production of chlorophyll.

oh cool, thank you for that. My original math was 10-12-12 but that didn't seem right, guess I wasn't far off.

epsom salt...i had no idea it had that effect!

i usually think of cactus as severely dwarfed fruit trees, so i feed them similarly just lower on the doses.
as spanishfly points out a balanced fertilizer, or even better one with lower nitrogen would work nice, I also add some rock dust to the soil mix to add micronutrients, also varied tipes of rock gravel or grits could do it, some brix fertilizers for fruit trees might do it as well. I personally haven't tried the epsom salts, so i can't address on that.
The last two years i've been using bird droppings or worm castings as my source of nitrogen. I just don't trust mineral ferts, 'cause i cant know what most of the product is composed of (for example the Schultz one you mention is 2-7-7, which is 2%N, 7%P, 7%K,. Whats the other 84%?) and are extremely soluble so theres the risk of burning your plants and loosing the nutes after a few waterings. Bird droppings have a low solubility (N is in the form of uric acid) so little bit sprinkled on top goes a long way. And usually are free for the taking :wink:

I just dissolve about 1/4 teaspoon in my 7 litre can and thoroughly wet my plants with that.  A little goes a long way.

Cacti aren't picky,and you can use any all purpose fertilizer on them,I've found.
