Straw Help
    #2227066 -

I bought a bale of straw today and was wondering if it was the right thing. They did not know what type it was but hey it was straw so I went for it. Its kinda yellowish green. Thats the only thing I can really say about it. Any idea???

Yellowish green sounds like hay. You want straw, which is golden.

This is the best kind of Hay-straw available (check the file name). It is nice and golden and I can tell you, I will colonize her sooo fast.

Isn't the difference between hay and straw the presence of the ear/grain/head in hay and the absence in straw. I never associated a color with either, other than the level of drying that has occured in the product.

The glossary is your friend:

http://www.shroomery.org/glossary

Hay
Grass that has been cut, left to dry in the field and then baled. It is fed to livestock through the winter when fresh grass is not available. The color of hay is greenish-grey.

Straw
The dried remains of fine-stemmed plants(wheat, Rye, barley...) from which the seed has been removed in threshing. Straw has a golden color.

Now who wrote those fine glossary definitions?

I used to play in bales of hay and make forts from them. The hay I saw was nice and golden. Granted I have seen green hay, but only as an indication of premature baling.

I will concur that all straw I have seen is golden. This is likely because the threshing process requires the grain to be thoroughly dried, while hay may be bailed before complete drying to avoid spoiling by rain.

So, all straw is golden, most hay is golden (some is green), and alfalfa is always green and I think Anno may be always right...but I'm holding out on that one.

I compiled them from the internet and own experience.

The bale you have is great to use in compost, wheat straw being the best, however the type you have works good once composted(just takes longer):) bluhoney
