Horse Poo: Muffins or Compost?

I recently found a new source for hpoo in my area.
The people are nice, the shit is free..... ::wonders when animal shit wouldn't be free::
They throw it in the back, layer of poo, layer of straw, so on and so forth untill it's as high as I am tall.
I can't help but wonder if the compost would be better than sifting the straw out and using just the fresh(er) horse muffins?
At any rate, and in the time being, I sifted it (BY HAND!) and got the muffins out, drying on plastic.

Ive found that the best thing to do, is to walk around the horse pasture, getting fresh turds, old turds, wet turds, dry turds. Get a mixture of all different ages and consistency's. Make sure that it is wheat straw and not alfalfa.
People use a mix of straw and poop all of the time, no worries.

That's what I wondered....if ppl combine straw with the poo at pasturizing, why not just compost them together at the start. TMC mentioned some benifical microbe...bacteria? Don't have it in front of me, that grows in the 125F range in compost heaps, helps colonization and pinning...
And to be honest, I have no idea what kind of dried grass it was they use. Getting the stable boys to show me the poop-pile was interesting, they knew only spanish. I called a buddy of mine and said, tell this guy I want to take some horse shit home with me. Handed the stable boy the phone and a few seconds later he gave me this WTF look like he was on candid camera. funny.

It is a very good idea to use composted poop/straw. Because it has already went through the bacterial bloom phase. Its easier to use without getting contams.
One of the beneficial fungus is called fire fang.

If I were you, I'd go around an dont collect anything fresh, or anything to composted. Get the nugs that have been rained on and sun dried over and over again so they are well weathered. You do not need to screen it, or remove the straw.

If i'm understanding you, and it's horse shit / straw, thats perfect I really think that cow manure is a bit better suited for shrooms, especially asian strains, but most manures require some sort of fiberous material (straw, hay, verm, sawdust) to make it suitable for shrooms. Poop/straw is awesome.

Nuggets,Muffins,Potatoes,Lumpers& Shit Bricks

= Gold
7 days after spawning WBS to about 7 LBS of collected poo (From above bin) using Scatmanrav's substrate. Double Tub Setup

7 days after spawning WBS / PF to Horse Poo + a lil finely chopped straw. Roadkill Poo Prep TEK
 ===================================================== Composted Poo

=
Trash
Not trash, but I'd have to say... muffins, nuggets and potatoes are what you want. No fresh smelling piles. The fresh poo will be heavier than the drier, older stuff. But the OLDEST stuff will look like what I posted above, kinda like dirt.
Good luck on yer hunt!
By the way.. hunting for your own is MUCH better than buying 5LBS of substrate from anyone. You'll be able to pick up more than 5 LBS for yourself for free, and pasturizing is very easy.

Look at it. If it isn't like dirt and still has some fiberous content to it, it may work fine. Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick

All the turds I picked were nice and old. A few yielded some urine when I squeezed the crap out of them, so I'm drying them on a tarp behind my house.
The question I'm struggling with is not the age or type of poop to use, but whether or not straw/hpoo compost would be more effective than straight doo-doo.
I guess i'll have to experiement.

Straight hpoo contains straw which has been processed and broken down slightly by the horse...thats great straw. Adding straw to hpoo isnt the greatest...the hpoo does great without EXTRA straw. But you dont need to screen out the stuff thats there, that stuff helps give it a fiberous texture that you want. Coir helps that too. I do adda bout 2-5% chopped straw to my hpoo (chopped in blender) along with coir, worm castings, kelp meal, and verm..but its maily cause I have lots of straw here left over. When I run out I probably wont add any anymore.
