Starting My First Grow

So, to start I researched, read, researched, and read some more on the cultivation of mushrooms and where newbies go wrong. With that said, I found the cheapest pressure cooker available.

Great 6qt pressure cooker for 20 bucks, had it ordered to my local store online (Walmart.com) and picked it up along with some 1/2 pint ball mason jars($9), a bottle of disinfectant spray and gloves($2), and an all clear tub with a approximate 6" depth, 24" length, and 8-10" width after much search at Walmart($9) along with a cheap tub for incubation storage ($3) spray-painted black on the outside to keep dark. Swung by my local hydroponics store and found one bag left of Horticulture Grade Vermiculite for 10 bucks, decently large size bag.

As I was picking up materials for starting, with my spores in delivery, I figured I would complete my list. After a long search at OSH and then Lowe's, I found the perfect 'daytime' 6500k light ($12) to use during the fruiting stage, as the environment does not have natural light available.

During my initial search at OSH, I found good size bag of Perlite ($6). This was of course after I had two store associates tell me that they don't have it.

I also ordered a 2-pound bag of Arrowhead Mills Organic Brown Rice Flour for $3.80 on Jet.com with free two-day shipping.

Literally got it next day.




So, in total set-up cost for materials I didn't have without the cost of spores, I spent $'75, give or take a small amount. That includes a Pressure Cooker, 12 Mason Jars, Cleaning Materials, Incubation and fruiting containers, substrate ingredients, and proper lighting.




The anticipation now awaits for the spores to arrive. I did more research before obtaining spores, waiting from two different reputable sources with a variety of different strands to experiment..




As I know that I will be receiving them tomorrow afternoon, I started preparing my jars. I took three lids off the jars and drilled 3-4 holes in each for inoculation points. Hopefully they're big enough for the needle, but I still tried to keep them small to prevent contamination.

I brought my pressure cooker up to high boiling point with some water in it and the rack that came with it at the bottom.

To make the substrate, I used a mix of 2 parts Vermiculite, 1 part Organic Brown Rice Flour, and 1 part bottled drinking water (mineral enhanced). Filling three 1/2 pint jars, I left a 3/4"-1" gap in each jar to add plain vermiculite for further protection against contamination.




After tightening the lightly-packed jars down with the lids flipped upside-down (rubber seal side up) I wrapped two layers of foil around the lid and upper portion of the jars.

With the water now boiling, I brought it down to the lowest boil (I tested this to be right at Med on my electric stove) and entered the three jars evenly spaced from each other, making sure not to touch the sides. Closing the lid and adding the pressure regulator, I let it go at it for about 1hr 15min at 12 psi (only option for my cooker).




Thought I'd start this thread to have available help if I start to run into issues. I've been testing out how to keep the grow environment at a constant 77-84 degree temperature with the minimal amount of attention needed. The biggest problem I have is overheating the VERY small space closet. I'm using a oil type space heater (old style) with a thermostat built in. I think I'm getting a pattern down to keep it at a constant heat with only having to give attention to it once or twice a day, just need a little more trial and error.

During the testing process I have accidently gotten the inside of the 'test' tubaware to around 94 degrees in temperature. If this happened during incubation or fruiting for a short span of hours would it have a strong negative effect?

Anyways, I created this thread to in order to receive feedback and get potential help/advice throughout the process when needed. I will be continuing to update this thread (bare with me, I'm new to posting on forums) as I make progress with hopes for positive results in the end.
Let it be noted as well that I have done this in the most absolute clean environment, completely sanitizing the whole inside 'residential' place, using simple green, bleach disinfectant, floor cleaner, Windex, etc. I clean EVERYTHING in what I consider an efficient and proper manner, in every room.

So I made this (above^) yesterday, therefore
UPDATE:
I inoculated the jars at approx. 1pm earlier this afternoon. I stored the three half pint jars in the dark inoculation chamber and in the closet. The temp upon entering them was 84 degrees F, now at 80 degrees F 10 hours later without using the heater yet.
Yesterday I turned the heater on with a one hour timer and found it still turned on in the morning(5-6 hours later)giving the room a temp about 105-110 inside the test tubaware, with the incubation chamber sitting on top. I did this with the jars in the closet at the time prior to inoculating them. I let them sit at room temperature for hours before injecting spores. Did this possibly dry out my cakes too much? Will I have to start over with new substrates? I gave it an attempt anyways, so I'll know for sure soon..

ya dont use a heater they will be fine at room temperature and they dont need darkness.  put them on a shelf somewhere where they will recieve ambient light and dont touch them. 

its time for neglect tek.

new growers overthink EVERYTHING.

Yeah you should really adjust your temps to about 70 to 75 if you need to have some type of incubation due to a colder home. If that's not the case you can leave them sitting out if your temp at home is normal. You don't need to keep them in the dark that's outdated info. Besides that you seem to be doing fine if you get past this step and get some good colonization don't for get to dunk and roll your cakes. Good luck hope to see some Good pics.

I went ahead and prepared another three jars with substrate yesterday evening. During this,
I noticed that water's leaking (bubbling out) the left handle on the cooker.
Taking that back later today or tomorrow for a new one.
I did the same mix, except in the last jar I used a slight amount more water in the mix to observe differences throughout the research.
Should be getting spores for four more different strands today.

Walmart carries a presto 01745 16qt pressure cooker for like 60 bucks. It's a good starter. Can fit about 16 BRF jars in it.

And just for knowledge sake, "strains" are just different genetic varieties of this species of mushroom. Helps avoid confusion. So if you see someone say "variety" you'll know what they mean =)

you can get a mirro 22 qt online for 65.

Does your PC leak during the whole cook or just a little in the beginning?  Some of them have a valve that will vent steam in the beginning and then seal as they come up to pressure.  Even if you want to expand to a bigger unit later, a small one can be handy if you just need to knock out a few agar plates.

Mine leaks until it comes to pressure.  I'm gonna get a new gasket.  Use cooking oil or Vaseline around the rim prior to each run

Mine has that valve, it was leaking from the handle on the opposite side. A screw ended up falling out of the handle on the use and can't seem to get the threads to find/grip anything in the screw hole. Also, the white factory writing came off on all the handles after it heated up the first time. Probably will invest in a bigger one

Hey guys, checked on the three jars from my original batch (03/28) and have some growth. Posting pictures to make sure everything looks right. I'm the noob, you guys have seem to give great advice so far!





I wish the pictures were a little better quality so you can see it at the same level as me, unfortunately that was the best I can do. Any noticeable issues or is it looking normal?

Yes, my bad. I knew 'strain' was not the proper terminology, just wasn't sure on exactly how to word it.
So question, are strains the edibles, psilocybe cubensis, and medicinal type goods while the 'varieties' are all the different kinds in each said strain?

Psilocybe is the genus in which multiple active species (and one inactive) fall under. Cubensis is the species that most grow here. "Strain" is a term loosely/improperly used for the various types of genetic traits. These traits have been grown time and time again to exhibit certain features; e.g., Golden Teachers and B+ look different but at the end of the day are still Psilocybe Cubensis.

Jars are colonizing very nicely now, some way more rapid than others(some ended up with different amounts of solution). The second and third batch of mix made came out a little more 'thick'(more water) making it harder to see the colonization. I'll post pictures once all fully done... Should I dunk the first time taking them out of the jar or after the first flush?

pull cakes out of the jars and do a dunk then roll in vermiculite, use a spray bottle and mist them a bit

The cake will still need moisture once it is done both colonizing and consolidating. The water you give your cakes during the dunk is the water that's going to help create the ~92% water weight of your first flush's fruits.

About a week and a half into colonization, I'm posting some pictures. The first batch (1st three jars pictured) came out a little less thick of a mix. I think it had more vermiculite, and the second and third batch had more water(and a touch of honey). The second and third batch are harder to see colonization and the jars have a dark yellow/gold coloring on some of them, but they all are still colonizing. Anything to be worried about or all good?

When did you read to put honey in a brf jar now we got a brf liquid culture combo teks misinformation my dude. You are definitely on your way to the mushies though! What are your fruiting chamber plans my friend.
