Ernie ball super slinky are my personal preference. Read up and watch some YouTube videos on setting up your guitar, it will be invaluable knowledge.

Been playing guitar for 22 years or so, had a refret once, action lowered once for $10, other than that nothing... all my guitars are perfect action. Tune ups are overrated unless it starts out playing like shit.

I'd check out the tens, your guitar will survive. It'll take years for the neck wear you were warned against, if that even happens. And if it does happen 10 years from now, you'll have a stage prop guitar to smash on stage. Also there's about 5 billion replacement guitars out there...

I haven't read the replies, but in the future dont deal with guitar center. They are dumbasses, and that setup was an obvious upsell. Better yet, learn to restring and setup your own instrument, its easy.

I won't comment on string gauge because its a matter of opinion and im sure you got plenty of those opinions already.

I've had 3 electrics over the years that needed setting up, otherwise my harmonics were off or non existent. After swapping in a Floyd rose I educated myself because the action was horribly horribly high.

Also yes if you play guitar you better know how to restring your own, tune your own, and adjust action. That is basic knowledge and you can learn it in 5 min or less

love seeing all these musicians on the shroomery. Saddens me that more and more kids are learning to "dj" because its the cool thing to do, and no longer picking up a guitar.

I'd just like to point out that just because your favorite musicians did something one way, doesn't necessarily make it right.

Case in point Paul McCartney use to pluck the bass with his thumb instead of his index and middle finger like a mongloid. Its terrible technique, but its Paul McCartney though so fuck it right?

Thicker strings will create a thicker tone because there is more mass creating a stronger magnetic field from the strings vibratin and as a result a higher output from the pickups.

Switching up just one size may require some intonation problems and a bowed neck (nothing permanent) but you might be able to get by without changing anything. Just try them out and if you have any fret buzz then adjust the truss rod. If you have intonation problems then adjust the bridge. These are not complicated adjustments. I recommend doing some research and doing it yourself so you don't have to pay for these minor adjustments. Just don't go too far with the truss rod or it can damage the neck if you go crazy with it. A quarter turn or two of the truss rod should do it.

If higher output before your amp is desired, there are a lot of way better ways to do it that don't make your guitar borderline unplayable.

Most obviously; high output pickups or a pre-amp.

Also strings don't have a magnetic field, the pickups do, so that's absolutely false.

10's make a guitar borderline unplayable? I get your point and it is totally up to the player. For example, Billy gibbons from zz top uses 7's. But I've experimented a lot and 9's just sound too thin for me.

Oh really? Then what is it exactly that induces a voltage in the pickups? Guitar strings are made from ferrous metal for that very reason. Try playing an electric guitar strung with nylon strings and let me know how that works for you. The theory behind this concept is very sound.

IIRC, Dick Dale used to use bass strings for his electric guitar, but the neck was the old 60s style (much thicker), and Dale was famous for liking thick, heavy wood guitars (he once said that if you could string a telephone pole, that would give the best sound). I personally like the sound of lighter strings much better.

The strings disrupt the magnetic field of the pickups,  they do not have a magnetic field themselves.

I put 11's on my acoustic awhile back and they sound so much better than the 9's or 10's I was using before.

The sound is much more "full" and better suited for jazzier stuff, it can still get the twang for bluegrass too and is very versatile now.

It really comes down to the guitar and intended use. For example many arch tops are made for 11's I believe, that or they suit them better at least.

Also depending on the wood used heavier strings might be needed to make up for a less responsive body and vice versa.

Strats are my main thing.  Here's what you do to setup your strat after going to heavier strings:

1. check the trem system and make sure it's not pulled up off of the body.  It's supposed to be flush with the body.  If it IS floating up off the body then you need to either add more springs in the back, or move the springs to go diagonal to make more tension.  Caution, as you do that you should retune the guitar constantly.  pulling the trem to the body makes the guitar go sharp.  Once you loosen the strings back to standard tuning you may find that the bridge goes all the way back down.  It's a back and forth.  Although if you're like me, and use whammy bar a lot there are more advanced things to worry about with trem adjustment too.

2. You need to let that guitar sit for a while after changing strings or adjusting the truss rod.  The neck will slowly bend to a new equilibrium.  Now, press down the first fret and the last fret of the 6th string at the same time.  There should now be only a tiny, tiny gap at the 12th fret.  Pros use spacer tools to get the perfect measurement.  But honestly it doesn't need to be that precise.  Basically only enough space to slide a few pieces of paper between.  If there is more, then you need to tighten the truss rod.

3. tighten the truss rod.  Take the 3d and 4th string out of the nut grooves so that you can get the allen key wrench in there.  Yes, you'll need an allen key wrench set for this.  Now tighten the truss rod 1/4 turn.  Then you have to wait again for the neck to slowly bend to it's new equilibrium.  Then repeat steps 2 and 3 until there is only that small gap.

4.  after waiting a while, maybe even a few days, adjust the bridge saddle heights.  Start with one string and fret each fret and pick the string.  Make sure each note rings clear without getting muted or prematurely fading out.  If it doesn't sound right then use a tiny allen key wrench to raise the bridge saddle a little bit.  If it DOES sound fine then lower the saddle until it sounds weird and then go back up a little bit.  It's also a good idea to bend the strings how you would when playing, to make sure they still sound when moved across the fretboard.  Sometimes if the strings are too low they will "fret out" meaning the string is touching a fret higher up the neck and can't vibrate.  Usually on electrics there is some string buzz.  That's when the string is vibrating against other frets and sort of buzzes.  Some buzzing is ok.  Some players don't mind a lot of buzz in order to get the action really really low.  Unlike acoustics, electric fret buzz isn't a big problem because generally you can't hear it through an amp.  Do this for each string.  If you have a cheaper guitar you may notice that you have one or two problem frets that stick out further than the others.  Also, if you are getting a lot of frets that don't sound then you've gone too far with the truss rod and need to back it off.

That's basically it.  Like I said before, there are great youtube video tutorials that show you step by step.  Find one where they are doing it on a strat.  Going up one string size shouldn't be a huge deal.  You should not need much adjusting if your guitar was setup properly before.  If the bridge doesn't pop up you might not notice a difference at all without a new setup.  But yeah, if the bridge pops up that MUST be taken care of.  Everything else, when going up a gauge isn't as important.  The action will be higher.  So the guitar will still be playable with no truss rod adjustment.

I have a strat question maybe you can help me with, I bought my first strat off ebay awhile back and have been upgrading it steadily since. It is a Vietnamese guitar with korean electronics which I have been slowly replacing, so far I changed the pickups, capacitor and 2 out of 3 pots as well as modding the second volume control to be a secondary pickup selector for extra possibilities.

The main issue I have had with it is finding a trem bar that fits the bridge... I bought a cheap mexi standard one that is way to small.

Now I am not sure which I should try next, the MIM one is what I was thinking but I don't want to waste money on another trem bar that doesn't fit.

Never had that exact type of strat so I can't tell you which whammy bar to get

But I have had that problem with strat whammy bars.  Apparently they make at least a few sizes :crazy2: I had a MIM strat and got a replacement trem bar and it didn't fit. Same problem with my MIK, and USA.  (I tend to break whammy bars every few years or so ) I took it back to the store and had them get me a different one that did fit.  So I would suggest bringing your strat to a big guitar store that carries fenders.  Usually they have a bucket o' trems somewhere behind the counter.  Or ask if you can bust it out and try before you buy.  If it doesn't fit, then they have a new trem bar for the bucket.  w/e

But if you are online order only, then idk.  I don't have much experience ordering music shit online.
