You know SRV used heavy gauge strings, right?

You guys are worried about bowing your neck.

Obviously your guitar was not sonically designed for such high tension.

You think you know better than Luthiers?  They designed your guitar with optimal string tension in mind and you think putting on strings with so much tension they might damage your guitar makes it sound better?  You're wrong.

Perhaps on electric, I can see why that might be the case.
On acoustic and classical guitars the picture is definitely very different.

They're not really hard on your fingers man

The reduction in volume and sustain is actually even more pronounced on an acoustic than electric.

I'm sure that quarter turn on the tuning pegs makes all the difference.

I was in agreement that heavier strings are generally not a good idea.  Did you even read the entire thread?  Get off your high horse.

Best part about modifying string gauges

On acoustic guitars, heavy high tension strings are even worse because they pre-load the bridge and sound board which limits it's capacity to vibrate.

I've always heard the opposite, honestly couldn't tell you if its true because I've always been concerned with the tone and have not noticed any difference in volume or sustain.

Perhaps I should be more concerned with volume though

Interesting train of thought.

I've thought about it from the perspective you present, generally what I've heard people say is something to the effect of "more power driving the thicker strings = more volume".

As a vocalist however, this would not work. You produce volume through resonance in the facial cavity, resonance not "projection" of power.

However, analogies can sound perfect without being relevant.
I learned on the piano that mechanical analogies do not translate to anatomical realities, long story there...

I have no opinion on the matter, it is an interesting idea though.

I've tried every different kind of string you can imagine on acoustic, and I have settled on light-medium light because they give the best volume, sustain, playability, and for the genres I play; tone (in my opinion)

Like I said heavy guage strings pre-load the soundboard too much and inhibit it's ability to vibrate fully.  They are also very hard on your fingers.

I tried heavies because someone told me they are louder with better tone so I tried it and I found the opposite, plus it hurt my fingers.  I also could tell it was borderline bad for the guitar.

In the style I most commonly play, I am competing with other very loud instruments like banjos and fiddles, heavy guage strings did not help, in the end it was light guage that worked better.

Also don't underestimate how easier playability will improve tone and volume as well.

And lastly on acoustics tone is vastly more dictated by the construction of the Instrument itself.  If the guitar is a lemon  o set of strings is going to produce a great tone.

With high tension heavies the strings do have more mass and can hold more energy (in theory)  however that is not the only factor at play.  The way that energy transfers to the sound board is even more important.

Basically with high tension heavies, the player must do more work to produce the same amplitude of vibration, yet the vibration does not transfer as well to the sound board.

So what I'm saying is that high tension heavies are inefficient, you need to do more work to produce less sound.  Not only that, you've also fucked up the playability of your guitar and your technique will suffer even further depreciating the sound.

I've always enjoyed the tone of heavy gauge strings, but I've been considering lightening up recently for the same reasons you've stated.

Next time around I'll do some experimenting.

Also think of it like this;  it takes more energy to produce the same amplitude of vibration with heavy, high tension strings.

If your picking technique stays the same, you will be producing less amplitude in the strings.

If you want to produce equal amplitude, you will need to adjust your picking style to something more forceful.

It's inefficient.

Most of the time what happens is people pick the same as normal on their new heavies which means compared to lighter strings, they are producing less amplitude in the string oscillation.

Wider vibrations create a thicker tone.  Not wider strings.

High tension strings also have a very harsh attack, which to my ear is unpleasant (personal preferance)

That is largely the comparison I was making with vocals.

Its interesting how similar the ideas are in a purely mechanical sense, I've attempted to write out a neat comparison, but classical vocal technique is a relatively abstract subject. Not looking to write a book here, so fuck it

Honestly I think heavy strings are some kind of subconscious Freudian phenomenon where desire for heavier strings are a reflection for a desire for a larger "appendage"

:freud:

Personally, I took the heavy string idea up way back when I was into blues and American folk music.

That being said, there is a lot of machismo in those genres. Its very overt, but it makes sense if you consider that a lot of these guys were black musicians traveling the south during segregation. Not only do they have to deal with racism, but the belief that they're playing degenerate devil music.

I'm not going to pass a verdict on where this comes from, because I'm not a guitarist (played guitar 11 years, but I'm a vocalist) however I pin the machismo behavior of those people to the violence of the times and circumstances.

I'm not even a competent guitar player but I prefer heavy strings OP, to me they sound better, and also feel better. The light ones they often use in guitar shops make the instruments feel more like toys imo
