Agar question................

In making an agar mixture could i use 10 grams of finely grinded Rye Berries instead of using Malt Extract in a 10g Rye/10g Agar Agar powder, and 500ml water? If no why not, thanks for the help. :smile:

I have used finely ground rye in addition to basic MEA...I have read that it promotes growth when transferred to rye quarts as the mycelium has acclimatized to the rye as a food source. Don't know how rye would work as a replacement for the malt extract...perhaps not enough of a sugar source for germination/growth of mycelium. Give it a shot and report back...

Yeah i sure will, im just waiting on my new pyrex petri dishes. Doe anyone also know where i can buy Malt Extract? Is it the same used for beer brewing? Any info will help thanks and keep the replys coming on the Rye.

Hi, some of the shroomery sponsors carry malt extract like myco supply and others. Have you tried PDA, its just potatoes, sugar and yeast simple but effective. I think you need some sugar source to add to the rye powder, but give it a try and post results.:)bluhoney
