How the hell do I use this knife sharpener?

I have a Rapala Fish'n Fillet knife. It's the one with the wooden handle and leather carrying case. It came with a small little red sharpener. It's plastic and has two white ceramic poles that are criss crossed in the middle of it. I need a nice sharp blade. I've never sharpened a filet knife or a knife with this kind of sharpener and don't want to damage it. Thanks.

get yourself a couple whetstones or arkansas stones(600 and 2000-6000 grit) and a strop. learn how to use on a cheapo knife. those rod sharpeners blow dogs

The one that came with mine actually wasn't too bad.. I was pretty shocked when it actually fucking worked to be honest. It keeps the knife way sharper than I could ever achieve by hand and way sharper than any other guided sharpener I've used. It's not literally razor sharp (I've had a straight razor) but it's good enough for it's purpose. Only works with that knife though. :shrug: I tried it on a few other blades and it just didn't work right.

you can put a working edge on a knife with a cinderblock, getting one sharp enough to shave or filet with is easy and fun once you learn though. its a good skill to have and a 40-60$ investment will be enough to sharpen hundreds of knives. every time i do it for someone they gawk at how sharp it is like they didnt know a knife could be like that

I've tried I just can't do it by hand unfortunately. I mean I've REALLY tried. I have at least 3 or 4 stones in my house somewhere right now and I have at least a dozen others in my past at some point. I used to collect knives. No matter what I did I could never do it though. I got a bench grinder, eventually I'm gonna make a jig and get a good wheel for it. My problem is keeping the angle of the blade right. I know they make guides, but I never wanted to order one. If I could hold the blade still and let the stone do the work, I think it would be a lot easier, which is where the bench grinder would help.

And I second what Gresh said, those guided sharpeners are garbage.
Get a couple wetstones and a strop and learn to sharpen by hand, that is how you achieve and maintain the sharpest edge possible.

What blades do you not want sharp? The only dull blade I have, is some little tiny knife I use for chopping the fuck out of my toenails. Don't necessarily want that razor sharp.

In general though.. a dull blade is a huge liability. You are much more likely to hurt yourself using a dull blade for pretty much anything than you are using something razor sharp.

I only have two knives. A fillet knife for cutting fish fillets and an all around pocket knife for whatever-mostly fishing uses though. And yikes, did I read that correctly, you use a knife to trim your toe nails?

When i was younger i was watching some show.that had compiled lists of the most horrifying er stories. One of them was a lady used a knife to cut her toenails, she slipped, cut off her pinky toe and her cat grabbed it and.ran.off with it.:lol:

I don't get how that could happen... Was she using a hammer to bang it through the nail? My first thought was super dull knife and she was pushing really hard but if it's that dull, I can't imagine it getting all the way through cartilage/bone and what not..

"that" sharp.  There is such a thing as too sharp for certain blades and blade applications.
