Reminded me of a RAW quote:

Circuits is Leary-speak. Where would R.M. Bucke have spoken thusly? :shrug: Bucke  wrote contemporaneously with William James. I think Bucke's Cosmic Consciousness was published in 1900 and James'  The Varieties of Religious Experience in 1901.

I see nothing of R.M Bucke having spoken in terms of circuits, it's an assumption on the behalf of RAW that he was experiencing the 8th circuit of consciousness, yet also an assertion that most pantheists would agree that the universe "is not a dead machine but a living presence."  Anyways, the point was that there might be diversity in experiences of enlightenment, different flavors of enlightenment.  I like the idea, but you may take it with a grain of salt.

I like the idea of the universe being conscious in varying degrees, not to mention degrees of Unitary mystical states being experienced, because this is what my own experience has shown me. Consciousness can be shifted to an astral body, which is still a body with directional vision even through it may seem invisible to the consciousness 'inhabiting' it. But there have been experiences that were of omnidirectional awareness without an egoic referent, either in terms of directionality (spatiality) or in terms of a 'me' with no name, memory, thought, or sensation - just light, compassion, and the awareness of Pure Identity. This was a much much more subtle condition of consciousness - perhaps a pinnacle experience for a human being. I have never considered pantheism to be accurate, perhaps panentheism is closer to it, but that seems more dualistic. Yet pantheism differs from monism even though they are both positing a unity (pan- theism meaning '[It's] all-God'). I don't know if a definition can adequately encapsulate Ultimate Reality to anyone's intellectual satisfaction.

Well, I suppose it's a different notion than The Perennial philosophy (Latin: philosophia perennis), [note 1] also referred to as Perennialism, is a perspective in the philosophy of religion which views each of the world's religious traditions as sharing a single, universal truth on which foundation all religious knowledge and doctrine has grown.  It may be more appropriate to think of some universals and some diversities, all is one, and all is many :wink:

I do see the equation of TRUTH = GOD = ULTIMATE REALITY. This is what Frithjof Schuon called in the title of his book, The Transcendent Unity of Religions and it is the Perennialist School (vs. the Constructionist School who does not embrace the ultimate Pure Consciousness Event or PCE but sees traditions necessarily forming all religious experiences). We talked about this and I've written at length on this topic, using my own Experience and how it could be seen through a variety of traditions, but that one tradition explicated it more robustly (to use a term from statistics) than the others. This doesn't mean that I had a Buddhist Experience so much as a school of Tibetan Buddhism had concepts that BEST expressed my experience in my estimation, after-the-fact.

Thanks for your concern Markos. To wellness all around, I'd say. :cheers: I am appreciating this thread to stimulate me to reflect, at this moment. Philosophy, the bitter drink, some good medicine...

I have to admit I haven't well groked the supposed basis of a science of happiness in Epicurus, which I have heard sometimes alluded to... I will have to read the later maxims more closely, but I think in any case I'd take the material cosmology more as a practical assumption. For instance material "substance" is what consists in atoms, and gathers and accumulates itself, in various aggregates according to theory, but what do we look to in Epicurus? It is specifically it is what fills our cup, or our well of wellness.

We know the feeling I think. I'd leave it to people who seem to want to "defend" or liberate a hedonistic ideal through scientism to do that, but I look to find a philosophy in feeling. Not that there isn't some logic in this that can be appreciated...

For instance, I was surprised to find that Epicurus's ancient discussion of hedone, "pleasure" is closely if not in gesture or principle basically related to this concept of ataraxia, or "tranquility". This ancient hedonism is not at the stake of health, and it seems he does sincerely raise the cup TO health. I think it must be a unified gesture...

3. "The magnitude of pleasure reaches its limit in the removal of all pain. When such pleasure is present, so long as it is uninterrupted, there is no pain either of body or of mind or of both together."

For one person I suppose this will always be sinking or losing one's head, or doing things in stupour that later poison the heart, but I see some reserve, while at the same time, trying to feel as full as possible on life. That seems okay to me. And could there be healing in a feeling, perhaps? That is what I would look to, as a somewhat broken down yogi at the moment. Anyway, I am quite well generally, and it is good to vent a little, so thanks for your concern Markos. To the matter!

Happiness is in my opinion not the right word, for Epicurus's goal, because it is too easy to say one is happy today. Epicurus is the philosopher not of mere happiness or contentedness, but joyousness, the wealth of wellness, what fills the cup...anyway that's what I'll say. Interesting discussion here, fellas.

Oh, I think we have a variety of Pure Consciousness Experiences  and share similarities due to them, but they are no more the same than us experiencing comparable states of divinity on psychedelics...  Certain values of Compassion, Truth, Wisdom, Beauty etc. are shared, but they are not precisely the same.  There is diversity in the mix.  Singularity and Multiplicity exist within the system.
