Cherish Every Moment
    #4190539 - 05/18/05 12:50 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Isn't that a lot of f***ing pressure? Oops! The mailman waved at me and I forgot to cherish that. A flower bobbed in the gentle breeze. Quickly now - gotta get to cherishing! A cloud puffed up, a cat ran by, a bell rang in the distance... Wait, wait, I am still cherishing the goddamn cloud and now something else is there to embrace and enjoy. I can't keep up. It is ALL too much. Too much. Can't I just cherish every other moment?

*THe EM team pulls up and Swami is quietly led away in a strait jacket with eyes glazed, foam running out of his mouth and muttering "Cherish - must cherish!"*

It's not easy to do. I'd be impressed if you could pull off even every other moment. I'd be impressed by anyone who could find just one moment a day to cherish.

When life is feeling crazy, rushed, busy, taking a moment to cherish is like being able to step out of the busy rushed room and into one where time slows and room is made for "living".

It's a way of giving to ourselves in a world that just wants to take, take, take from us.

I challenge anyone to go through a whole day cherishing every moment as if it were the last one here and I want to hear the report back on how it went.

Some days I pull it off better then not and those are the days where time slows, things calm, there is peace and I feel rejuvenated.

In today's world, people who are calm, in no rush, taking a deep breath to refresh and suck it all in, the beauty of spring rain, the gesture of a friend, the purr of a cat, with a smile on their face do seem like the crazy ones.

Road rage has become an accepted norm. Imagine if the road ragers took a moment to just appreciate they are alive and breathing or a song on the radio instead of focusing in anger on the guy who cut him off is his rush to nowhere.

Well first things first. I understand the certain tenet of spirituality which is commonly preached that you're discussing here, and I think it is semantically easy to misunderstand. Obviously, not every single spiritual readings, documentaries, seminars and such will be using the exact same phrases, terms, and dialects. In your case, the key word is Cherish. To me, that word strikes the image of exerting energy for a purpose. From that perspective, it's easy to see how fairly impossible it is to fully function at all times and in all places in such an energy expending manner. It's just bound to become another form of neurosis, which surely isn't a path to genuine, intrinsic peacefulness.

Now obviously, that would be a semantic path gone down a very undesirable direction, so it could be inferred that there may be a different perspective which is more efficacious and therefore probably more of an accurate view of what most spiritual teachers [who aren't wolves in sheep's clothings] mean to illustrate.

What if you could cherish every moment in such a way that is effort-less? Is it possible that there exists a form of loving and cherishing that is akin to accepting and "letting go"? From my experience, all that is required to experience such a non-attached cherishment is to put an end to the expensive, outward-cherishment. In other words: Cherish nothing, therefore everything. And because there is no outward cherishment, there is no motion generated for the psychological-pendulum to swing to cherishment's polarity, be it hate or whatever.

This is all idealistically speaking, of course. Realistically speaking, it seems to be that such ideals aren't quite so much a concrete goal to attain and sustain in all grim graveness, but simply a model to strive towards, and with some healthy balance of humbleness, one would hope.

heh, i was just about to post something similar...
you can cherish every moment, without necessarily being conscious that that is what you're doing.
Just open your eyes, listen for a moment, take a deep breath, let it out in a song (or just a single note)
just by living, you cherish every moment. All you have to do, is realise this.

Seriously though for a moment, the REAL problem with cherishing each moment, is that you have to cherish yourself cherishing the moment and one gets caught in an infinite regression loop. Trust me, I have been there and it ain't pretty.

Well I've got this fuckin cold right now and I don't cherish it. I've also got some poison oak from me dog. I don't cherish that either.

I have no desire to cherish everything. I do wish to be present though, even for the poison oak. There is an amazing feeling to being present. Things take on a quality like on shrooms, salvia, DMT, LSD, Lucid dreaming ect. That's my experience of it anyway.

When that happens I feel pretty good. Most of the time I'm focused on the future and sometimes the past. That is a hard life if that's all you know. Again that's my experience. I want to be careful what I say around you my friend. :mushroom2:

The basic problem that you may be seeing Swami is that one cannot effortlessly appreciate each moment, unless one is being present and aware in each moment. A handy trick for being in the present moment is to relax your body hilst sitting up straight, then effortlessly notice your thoughts and just observe them comming and going, arising and falling, appearing and vanishing. You may see that each passing moment is only a fleeting thought, and once you notice that each thought has no essence, so solidiy, apprecitation of being is naturally felt.

Love the oak. Savor it's delightfully scratchy irritation. Notice how the incessant itching brings you back again and again to the present.

I sell bottles of Posion Oak tincture as a meditation aid. PM me for details.
