There's this one video of a dude riding an elephant and this tiger just comes sprinting out of the jungle at high speed and does this crazy long jump and almost mauls the dude right off the elephant's back

Shit's crazy

They are working on making mosquitoes extinct

The problem is, when you go about eradicating species, there can be enormously unexpected results. Have you heard of the famine during the great leap forward in China that killed tens of millions? It was mostly initiated by killing of sparrows which were determined to be pests, and that they destroyed grain stores. Well it turns out sparrows eat locusts, who with no natural predators, devastated the fuck out of the agriculture there for years to come.

No, it is not third world overpopulation. They do just fine in the Sundrabans, where they kill people regularly
Most people live in the Urban areas
And we are people. They are not really that beautiful. I would argue the opposite

The difference is, dogs tend to help people and we have millions.

Mosquitoes kill millions with the diseases they spread they are fit for extinction they should be the highest on the hit list in my opinion.

I don't necessarily disagree - but as I was saying we should err towards caution with taking out huge chunks of the lower-food chain like that. Many birds and bats get a large amount of their nutrition from mosquitoes, as well as many aquatic creatures from their larvae. If one or some of these species also is important for feeding or controlling another creature/aspect of nature then what starts as one species can quickly spiral out of control effecting pretty ridiculously huge swaths of the ecosystem.

We will create a new ecosystem one that will serve man instead of dominate him. We are the gods of this world.

Yeah, but controlled extinction of the mosquitoes that only swarm around human populations in tropical and sub-tropical environments would be the goal. We have the biotechnology to wipe out human reliant mosquitoes without effecting other species of mosquito since the method is through bio-engineering a member of the species that only produces male offspring and keeps that trait in all future generations. That wouldn't wipe out the food source of the mosquito family, it would leave room for other mosquito species to fill in. Human reliant mosquitoes aren't prolific pollinators compared to their cousins that they compete with in swarm territory.

At least that's the theory. Might have unintended consequences no doubt though. Something may take their place with worse disease, but then we'd still have the technology to wipe the next wave out as well. I agree that playing with nature can lead to unintended results, but getting rid of disease carrying mosquitoes is on par with eradicating the bubonic plague in my mind. It's a necessary adjustment rather than a needless one such as tigers for example.

 I like wolves and they've killed 3 people in 3 attacks in the last 60 years in North America (My native state has over 600 - so there's definitely opportunity) - On the flip point, wolves keep coyote populations in check, there have been 160 attacks but only 2 fatalities. They eat a lot of people's pets though

Wolves were killed to protect livestock not humans.

No fing way the death toll is that high, you don't want to die by tiger carry a sword or wooden spear and only travel with many people. On the other hand a people who think gang rape and murder to silence the raper is ok and the womans fault for being a woman is justified deserve to die. More people die from venomous snake, russels viper and  saw scaled viper each year than tiger in total by huge margin.

I'm really dislike the overcaution. Species gomextincr, nature will recover.  Malaria puts tigers to shame, killing half of all people who ever lived

If you dislike caution, then you are like to end up like the Chinese... misidentifying the vector at which to attack the problem and ending up with 30 million dead because of it. I think that fighting the disease itself would be far more effective than fighting the carrier of the disease. If they can engineer a mosquito that is sterile why can't they engineer the parasite to be similarly ineffective?

Because the parasite in question is single celled and asexual. Even if it were sexual, it relies on blood cells to survive, so there is no way to engineer a protozoa that can affect other members of it's species without infecting the hosts of said parasite. You'd be giving people malaria to combat malaria, and it wouldn't even do anything.

 That's a good point, but I guess on further research my plan B is already almost in effect:
http://www.who.int/immunization/research/development/malaria_vaccine_qa/en/

It's not completely 'there' yet but its progress at the least.

malaria infected mosquitoes for your clinical trial!

and they use children for it?

Damn what the fuck

Lets do some math. For the sake of simplicity, lets say the number of humans killed by tigers is directly correlated to the tiger population.

300,000 humans killed over 210 years is roughly 1,500 people killed per year on average. Now lets look at the tiger population. From 1800 to 1920 there were roughly 100,000 tigers in the world. The site I'm looking at lists that steadily decreasing to roughly 6,000 in 1998. Doesn't have a more recent number.

So there were roughly 15 times more tigers in the 1800's than there are today. If we apply that to average of 1500 per year over the past 2 centuries that gives us an average of 100 people killed per year, where in the 1800's it would be much higher than 1500. Not to mention there are much more humans now and much less tigers. Just found a BBC link saying less than 85 people per year in india, a country of 1.2 billion, are killed by tigers so my math is probably somewhat close.

So i think it's safe to say that tigers killing humans used to be a huge problem, but isn't as of lately.

Honestly we don't even need tigers. People pretty well replace all the top predators, so I have less of a problem with the potential extinction of tigers than with many other ecological problems we're causing
I mean, sucks for tigers... but I'll put a human life before a tiger's life any day

what else are we gonna do, let them live in abundance an kill us just cuz they look pretty? humans are the coolest species of them all and we should kill the other species that try to kill us. why would we want some trashy human-killers to live? i'm not necessarily saying we should breach into their territory an kill the shit outta them, but if a tiger comes our way we should just kill it cuz it would kill us first anyway

See... that's probably the stupidest thing you have ever said. And that's saying alot for you Sheeks. There's 3,200 tigers left. That's not abundance.

The problem is the amount of people roaming their territory without precautionary measures, not the tigers themselves. People live with bears. Bears maul people all the time. But there's a whole hell of alot more bears left in the world. And alot of people take precautionary measures when living in and among-st bears. Like having dogs, sometimes guns, and even this awesome thing called bear spray.

I'm not saying I don't sympathize with the people, but I know that there are better ways to deal with this than forcing a species to go extinct. Especially with modern technology.
