Toyotas are not that great its all marketing
    #22948644 -

The consumer when it comes to that market share is largely middle aged male and not as easy to manipulate as a first time car buyer, or female looking for basic transportation. That's largely how Toyota has grabbed so much of the market share. Simply feeding off of the myth that they produce a more reliable product, which again going by facts and figures, is indeed a myth.

First to the "CANT kill a Toyota" comment. Trust me, you can 'kill' a Toyota same as anything else. We're living in the 21'st century, any one of the major manufacturers can produce a vehicle that you can abuse to an extent.

As for the choice of vehicles for 80% of the world, that alone doesn't grant them superiority status. For example, full size American trucks aren't allowed to be sold anywhere on Japanese soil due to unfair tariff laws imposed by that government. Reason being? Because obviously domestic sales would no doubt threaten Japans monopoly over their own market share in their own country. It's no secret either that the playing field is heavily in their advantage when it comes to domestic sales over here. Again, the superior product approach is a myth. There might have been some truth to it in the mid seventies, but not in this day and age.

What really bothers me (should bother anybody) is that Toyota is succeeding in dismantling the US auto industry and they're relying on the American consumer in order to do it. How embarrassing (for us as a nation) and you know they think of us as complete fools as a result.

If Toyota or Nissan was better then Ford or Dodge, then why on earth do almost all of our law enforcements across North America depend on a ford product ( Police Interceptor) to protect our streets, highways, schools, play grounds... Why are 80% of our ambulances stamped with a Ford logo... if these products were unreliable then why do the people that we put the safety of our lives into their hands depend on and put their lives into the hands of a Ford/Dodge?

As far as mileage goes, start inspecting the odometer readings on the bazillions of crown victoria cabs and squad cars that dot the landscape. Putting down huge mileage is critical to the guys that own and operate those cabs as a business

Notice when you get into these little debates, once you start throwing facts around, the pro Japan supporter starts to get desperate with "well, what brand of TV do you own?" Obviously, the TV is a crucial component in their lives and mainly responsible for their pro Japan quality leanings due to the ad spots targeted at them.

Fact of the matter is though (as far as this subject) Japan is trying its best to drive Detroit into the ground (especially regarding the current state of things)-- and relying on the aid of the American consumer in order to do it.

I find it disturbing, but not unexpected, that many people that have children don't have the modicum of intelligence to realize that without American industry and American made products their progeny will have a service job at McDonalds for a future. But a large number of American's are in fact stupid and will believe anything to the point of idiocy

I don't know much about cars so I'm curious: what facts and figures are you referring to?

Try a 97 buick lesabre, tinted, ultimate undercover/gangster car in one. Bought it at 36k a few years ago and it's great. Garage kept (old lady owned supposedly), like new paint, 3.8 litre V6, 20 city, 30 hwy, new seals/gaskets and only 800 total for the suspension parts and labor (about 3 grand total fixing it up, everything is in the 100's range to fix), ice cold a/c, great heater, rides like a caddy, 45oo cash.

Op, do you really have anything to back up your claims? I think the gap was bigger in the past as domestic cars are catching up with the quality of jap cars, and all cars are getting more advanced which means more potential problems. Still though, overall toyota's/hondas are better built and more reliable, though probably not as much as some people make it out to be. Also, the big 3 are outsourcing a lot of their manufacturing to canada and mexico while toyota is more and more outsourcing it to the USA.

As far as ambulances and cops... american is the way to go if you want a v8 rear wheel drive car or something with a diesel that will carry around over a ton in the back (I don't think toyota/honda make either). Japanese is the way to go if you want a reliable fwd car that gets 30+mpg.

they also buy chrysler and GM vehicles, most cop cars mear me are dodge chargers

now why do they buy them? well, there's a few reason, firstly, they're american
made and the cops dont want us to believe they're commie sympathizers. second;
they whole union/american jobs thing. third, the car companies took huge bailouts
and the contracts for these bailouts always involve the government buying the
products in order to make sure they repay the money

My 2000 Toyota Echo has 250,000 miles on it (200,000 that I've put on it myself), and gets 37-40 miles a gallon on the highway according to my own tests during long road trips. They are good lower tier cars. The blue book value of my car is like $1200 or so - so these cars don't hold much value in the long run. But they are a good car for economical reasons. Good fuel, cheap maintenance - I could drive it 20 more years no problem. I change the oil every 3000 miles, brakes and tires as needed. I could literally drive nearly 400 miles on $14 of gas right now, with no worries of breakdowns along the way. All on a car valued under 2 thousand.

I wont even sell this car. I'll buy other cars in the future, but I will literally run this one into the dirt before even considering selling it. It's value is far higher in daily usage than it is as an asset. There is some cosmetic damage on it, but I don't bother fixing the cosmetic shit because it doesn't add to it's value in anyway.

The Echo is like the lowest of the low for Toyota cars too. Other models are much better. They're pretty good cars for long term usage. Given that they don't hold much value, you can find them used for relatively cheap, and maintenance is a breeze on them. The price to value ratio on most Toyota cars is pretty high when it comes down to it.

I hate most Toyotas, but what you're on about is complete garbage.  As with any manufacturer there have been issues throughout the years, but they've overall faired better than the American makes in terms ov reliability. And by buying a Toyota, you're likely supporting American labor to a greater degree than if you bought an American make.  Last year, the most American car was the Toyota camry.  See: http://fortune.com/2015/06/29/cars-made-in-america/ .

I agree with everything except the last sentence. It is too much a generalization. Regarding Toyota a lot of the population has a long collective memory when it comes to cars. Especially older folks that got one too many Detroit lemons. You don't want to have an unreliable family car in the age of reliable cars. This is what Toyota accomplished, you have to give them some credit. I try to buy USA Made products when I can, and I do more than I say I do like a lot of people. I don't drive a Toyota but I can see why people get them.

That's it.  It's the price/value of Toyota that makes it good.  A lot of Toyotas can be very boring though, but they are practical and economic as heck.  There are also awesome higher end Toyotas too.  I'm a fan of Toyota pickup trucks, the supra is a great sports car, and the FJ is one of the best hardcore production 4x4s ever made.  The camry is also one of the most boring, but practical and reliable cars ever made.  Rav4 is a great compact suv too and 4 runner is good also.

My general opinion is thumbs up for the trucks and FJ, but if I'm getting a sedan I like something more fun.  Fuel economy is a factor, but so is the overall driving experience.  To me all but the expensive high end Toyota sedans are just pretty boring.  Same goes for Honda etc.

Ever since I bought my old volvo 850 I've been hooked on european cars.  They generally feel more solid and better quality, more fine tuned.  Pacific rim imports feel kind of "hollow" and generic to me.  No fun.
