Got Hailed again by my ISP
    #22891705 -

So this is probably like my 3-4th time getting hailed by my ISP about torrenting. :tongue2:

Shit is annoying. I took steps last time I got hailed to avoid detection via deleting all trackers whenever I downloaded a torrent, but they still got me somehow. I've tried finding free software to help anonymize my torrenting. I've found a few services, but most seems to require monthly payments, etc in order for the software to work.

Anyone else gotten hailed by the ISP for torrents? Anyone found ways to keep their torrenting anonymous?

VPN is the only way i'm aware of. deleting trackers or using peerblock etc. doesnt do anything, your IP is still visible in the swarm

its worth it IMO. a VPN is about 10$ a month and if you torrent things often you'll get your moneys worth several times over

Torrents use specific ports to transfer data.

Ports are kinda like channels omn the TV, they are used fro specific purposes.

If there was a way for torrents to use a different port for downloading, it would make it annoyomous....

changing the port used for torrents is pretty easy, its in the tools>options>communication menu in most clients.

it doesnt make you anonymous at all though.

I hear you. I think I might just do that. Do you now exactly how the VPN's work though? I imagine they must function differently then software like the Tor browser. Seems to me that they mask all internet traffic coming from the device they are downloaded on yah?

yup. I use torguard, its pretty simple, pretty much install-and-use. its got like 30 difference hubs to connect to and its just as fast as my regular connection(ping is high tho). they also have a proxy service thats cheaper and will only mask the traffic on your torrent client.

be sure to use a torrent client that will automatically shut down or stop downloading/uploading should your connection be dropped though

VPNs just seemed like a huge signal to the powers that be that you're doing shit. Oddly enough, I use a hotspot from a cellular, and have had no problems since.

eh, i doubt it. most businesses use VPNs and lots of people who work from home also use them. you using one to torrent is just a drop in the ocean of internet traffic.

good idea using the phone though. never considered that

Ah. Cool, I'm looking into express VPN, it has a pretty high rating. Heard any word on that service?

As for the torrent client that shuts down automatically should my connection be dropped, I'm currently using utorrent, do you have a better suggestion? And how exactly to I alter my settings so that it does that?

never used expressVPN, i'm sure its fine though.

i'd suggest using Vuze. i started out with utorrent and sometimes it didnt close when i briefly dropped connection. Probably not a big deal, but i switched to vuze anyways since it had a IP binding feature that didnt require it to even close down

Basically they warned me that one of the content providers I allegedly stole from snitched on me and that regardless of whether or not my computer is infected with a virus which may or may not be participating in the p2p file sharing, my service may be terminated if it continues.

Basically the media companies have finally found a way to fuck with torrenters by threatening to sue ISP's who don't deal with clients that have been caught torrenting. Apparently the government has also decided that those who have been caught torrenting must have their internet traffic monitored by their ISP's....

Some Patriot Act / CISPA bullshit...

Thanks for the advice bro. I assume Vuze isn't dependent on the hidemyass VPN though right? Considering you use torguard yah?

How much do you have to DL for them to say anything?

I have like 400+ movies, nearly every tv show I've ever liked, and discography's of nearly every artist I like and I have never gotten any warning:shrug:

doesnt matter how much, just what you download. i got tagged from downloading Girls Gone Wild last year, and had downloaded at least a few TBs worth of data in previous years before i just said fuck it and got a VPN

my brother got tagged like 22 times from downloading a bunch of Wilco songs, and that band isnt even very popular

Not 100% safe still. I am on a private tracker and got hit a year or two ago because of some stupid shit someone did, I can't remember what. Wasn't just me, either. It was a known issue and they had to take measures to make sure it doesn't happen again. Even if their new counter measures are bullet proof for that issue, that doesn't mean someone else won't find a way to fuck everyone.

VPN is the best way to go. Torguard is like 10 a month and I never noticed a drop in speed at all (without it I download at about 1-2mbps, and same with it). As you can tell by the name, they are a torrent friendly VPN service. I've had it for months and I think there might've been maybe an hour or two where I couldn't connect because of some critical update they made. Other than that, I was up 24/7.
