Glovebox : revisited
    #2287103 - 01/30/04 02:46 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Firstly, thankyou to everyone who's posted great pictures of thier own GB's,

*** update *** while searching through some junk in the basement for a spare PSU, AFOAF found a 115vac fan *AND* his forgotten hepa unit from when the asthmatic lived there. Can we say *POSITIVE PRESSURE Hepa Filtered* glove box.

Yes, I thought we could. Carry On.

AFOAF is into sailing and had some 4" inspection ports on his old albacore hull that died, as they were in good shape, but the hull was dead (ask me to relay the story some time) the hull was stripped of all hardware.
Being that he doesnt need the ports (like a plumbing clean out except with a flange) he figured 'hey... I dont have a GB, why not make one... he looked at the ports, and realized they were EXACTLY what he was looking for (yeah yeah he knows its overkill but his hope is to eventually make the GB set up for positive pressure with a hepa filter)
(yes pictures will follow at some point)

The outer side of the port was covered in rubber cement to provide a high friction surface so that the heavyduty nitrile gloves used would stick and seal well.

The holes were cut in the Rubbermaid bin with a hot knife, and then checked for fit.

Holes were drilled for nuts and bolts to hold the flanges to the container (stainless hardware) Yes it is overkill, but anything worth doing is worth doing right.

a bead of high quality silicone caulking was placed around the perimeter of the hole and around each of the bolt holes.

the access port was then installed. all bolts being tightened to secure it to the chamber wall.

Cost of materials
$11.00 for translucent/clear tupperware with lid
$2.00 for small tube of silicone caulking
$3.00 for container of rubber cement
$3.00 for package of heavyduty 'hero' nitrile gloves (size large or 9)
$3.12 for stainless hardware

Game on! AFOAF says pictures will follow shortly (not that they are necessary)

the inspection ports are plastic. they can be found in a chandelry (sailing/marine outfitting shop) I dont know how much they cost as I said i salvaged them from my dead sailboat. they have a seal on the screw in port so they *are* air tight
