Cacti Crest orientation and growth shape
    #22861213 -

How much can we influence the shape and growth patten of our crested plants? I have a few crests (cacti and euphorbia), and I really would like to know how I can encourage 'beautiful' growth pattern. Obviously light levels affect shape, and an etoliated crest is undesirable. But what about the direction if the light?

Does the orientation of the 'growth line' of the crest in relation to the sun influence the shape of the cresting fan? Should this line be perpendicular or parallel to the prominent light source direction?

What about BAP? How do areole or spray treatments affect crests? What about gibberellic acid treatment?

Here's a couple of my crests, nothing fancy. Euphorbia Lactea Crest and 'TPM' Trichocereus Peruvianus Monstrose Crest.

I only have one crested plant, it's a T. peruvianus, and I've found no link between the orientation of the plant and its growth patterns. It will crest in a line, then twist and convolute as it wishes. Other branches do rise and then twist back the other way. I've found age determines how the crest will continue growing.

BAp'ed areoles will produce reverted pups that do not crest again. My crest was BAP'ed when I got it so I could grow out the normal columns and make a guess as to whether it's a peruvianus or not. There's Two, 2 inch pups that need to be removed and grown on. I haven't got recent pictures of this crest but will take some over the coming weekend. Here's some pictures from a while back:

I'm not sure about your other questions as I have no first hand experience.

Beautiful crest karode. I wonder if those pups you took will ever re-crest? The genetics must still be in there? Maybe sit some snails on the tip.

We'll find out in time. I'm going to remove the Two reverted pups today and then root them out.

Not too sure about that. I do have Teratopia somewhere, I should read it again.

No no no no.  All snails do is rasp the tip off and cause them to pup. Unless you know something that I'm not aware of?

It was a joke, there's a theory that an infection from snail or insect damage can induce cresting. This hasn't been scientifically proven, but insect attacks have been known to cause cresting in some instances. Maybe you've heard of the famous Nitrogen seeds, (shaman australis) - he breeds with "TPQC", a plant that I think crested after snail attack.

Aldo, see 'causation' here in Wikipedia.

I have read about snail/insect damage causing cresting. I thought that was what you were alluding too.

I know all about Nitrogen and his awesome crosses. I frequent the SAB circles.
