Temporary freezes to my pc

My pc keeps on temporarly freezing during use for 10-50 seconds but hte mouse is still available to move but not to commit to any action until the pc unfreezes. This problem has been on and off for some time now. I've tried scandisk and anti-virus but to no avail. Perhaps a hardware replacement is in need but i'm not sure what exactly.

Here and my specs:

Micron Millenia
733 133mhz
20mb
Nvidia Geforce 256 :confused:

what operating system?
How long has the computer been on before it happens?
Have you thought about getting a new computer?

2. it varies, it can be quite imediate (within 10min) or longer (within 60min)
3. the pc is only 4 years old and at the time of purchase was the best on the market. I really don't want to dish out another 2,000$ for a replacement but I am willing to replace the parts that are causeing this problem or that need to be vitally upgraded. I have a budget of $500 to fix this problem or upgrade the pc, hoping that is enough.

My first guess, assuming hardware, is a bad or failing hard drive. Run scandisk on the system with a full sector scan (from safe mode) and go do something for a few hours while it runs.
