Geolite, the hassle free equivilant of perlite?
    #2278289 - 01/27/04 06:36 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Using Perlite for humidity works, but as you all know, it can get pretty messy, and is a pain to clean out of your terrarium when your finished.

So I was cruizing around the garden and pet wharhouse we have in town here and came across some geolite and then it hit me! Wouldnt it be easier to use this stuff? And just think! You can just clean them off real easy by soaking them in peroxide water or something then rinsing them off. Theyd be as good as new and ready to use over again.

This would be a good money saver! I was wondering if anyone has heard of doing this? I saw one guy doing it, and was just wondering about the re-use of the geolite? Using them over and over again? PLUS it'd be less messy.
Anybody?

I'm surprised you haven't heard of this being done before, as it is quite common. When Geolite is available it's always prefered over perlite.

Yeah I know, a few things slip by me here and there . I never really thaught of it and thaught it was harder to obtain, but its almost everywhere.
So, I guess you can wash it off and use it again huh? What do u wash it off with? bleach? Peroxide?

Not to hijack the thread , but I want to know if budget oil dry will work the same way as perlite ? Seems to me that it would make a good way to humidify and at a much cheaper rate .

I've been using geolite for about 10 months now and just use warm water and anti-bacterial soap to clean the stuff although I have used a mild bleach solution in the past.

It's a hell of alot easier to work with than perlite and those volcanic glass shards can't be too healthy for your lungs!

hydroponics outlets, soem garden stores and greenhouse places like Pikes, check for hydroponics in the yellow pages...

the cheapest source I know of is concrete companies....it could go as hydroton or geolite...as for expanded clay aggregete....on 20-30 pounds you might get out of there for nothing....I worked with it a few times....

Do a search for Magash's PMP.
It's the Deans Peanuts when it comes
to a fruiting chamber.
