what kind of heating pad? like one of those ones for your back or whatever? or a reptile UTH? i tried using the back heating pad thing, it didnt get the whole area warm enough, and its more of a conduction heater, as opposed to a convection heater/radiant heater. which gets the outsides of the jars too hot, when the insides are just right... i think its better then nothing, but i find a cheap aquarium heater + a tub in tub works nicely.

I'd get a fishtank heater mate and tub it up...I tried back when I started with a heat pad and it just dried out cakes. I had more success with millet jars left in a cardboard box on a shelf in the dead space of a 400w mother grow. But the tub in the tub hasn't failed me.

As I said in the other post "What's your incubator setup", I think
that heating pads create colder and hotter spots during the incubation
process, and what is needed is just a costant and well distributed
temp...

I would think a different way for heating the temp, of course if
what you get does not satisfy you

hey man heres what i do it works ok,sure a tub in tub would work better, but i dont have one so like you said this is better than nothing, and this keeps it a pretty constant temp.

Im cheap and poor,so all i did for my incubator was get a box that is big enough to hold all my jars with about an inch of clearnce around the edges.I took a piece of styrofoam about 2 inches thick that i got out of a old broken styrofoam cooler and i poked holesabout an inch in diameter all over the styrofoam.I put it in the bottom and put the jars on top, then i cut another piece of foam without holes and place it on top. Then just poke a meat thermometer through the top and close the lid,(i then cover with a towl but you dont have to).I placed the hole thing on a heating pad set on meduim and thats it.The strofoam that comes in contact with the bottom of the jars doesnt heat up at all because its so thick, but the heat comes through the holes and the top foam hold it in.Withe the heatpad on meduim, the thermometer reads 83 degrees all the time.I also put 2 small vent holes in the top of the sides of the box that let out the heat so it doesnt get too hot..Dont get me wrong im a newbie and its only been being used for about 16 days now,but so far so good

i do the same thing with the heating pad, only i just nailed it onto the top of the chest i have my bags in (using mycobags), in about 3 weeks i was fully colonized. not a bad deal!

I have used a tub/tub with a heating pad for several years...

to disperse the heat I filled the bottom with water and a few holes in the inner tub...the reason is so that the water will evaporate occasionaly reducing molds and other nasties

under the heating pad I kept a piece of flame retardant drywall ($8 for 1/2" 10'x8' sheet, broken pieces were free) set on low the constant temp was 87F. I've fruited in that same container a few time with cambodians...

I had this same question and after so tips from these guys i started testing and found that if you use a high quality grade reptile heating pad with a few moist wash clothes on it that it worked great.

The reason you need one of the expensive heaters is because the can regulate them selves and turn on and off as needed to keep the set temp.

old waterbed heaters are equaly effective...keep in mind that ANY setup you use safety should be a first thought...

anything that generates heat needs some way of dissipating it. fire retardant sheetrock is a wonderful item to place under a heating pad and it will also prevent you from scorching yout linolium like I did

I know someone who is a complete newbie, and he put his 1 pint jars in a box with a lid.. He then put an electric blanket on top of the box and keeps it on lowest setting at night, and off during the day.

It's been one week now, and all jars are 70 to 80% colonized.

My friend started off with the box sitting on top of the electric blanket. He noticed that jars were getting too warm sitting on the blanket, so he moved the blanket to the top, so the jars wouldn't have direct contact with the warm cardboard box. It seems to have regulated the temp. without the jars receiving direct heat..

I just purchased a heating pad for heating the body and those purposes for my jars because the temps where around 75 and i wanted to raise it to 85.

Anyways when i first put the pad there on the lowest setting only seperated by a couple peices of flat cardboard the temps ran up to the mid 90's. So i had a problem there. To fix it i had to put 10 brand new wash clothes in between the 2 cardboard peices to get my temps to around 85. Anyways its finally working as i want it. You just need some cloth seperating the 2 things to the right degree to keep the jars from not burning up.
