Heating pad incubation
    #1573366 -

What is the best way to use a heating pad to incubate?  I've already read the FAQ's and there is no specific info.  Do I put them under the jars?  How about in the same drawer?  Or what about on the jars?  I need specifics please, and thanks in advance for help.:smirk:

I've gotten very good results putting the heating pad verticly in the middle of all the jars. So people say on the bottom.

is a heating pad too hot? what about those heating pads from pet shops for reptiles? I'd think they're be made more durable (ie. sharp claws, spilt water, lizard pee.. etc...)

my iguana uses a reptile heating pad and she says it works well for colonizing mycelium granted you have a few layers between your terrarium and the pad since can get over 100 degrees.

My best results with a heating pad were in a semi-standard incubator, 2 rubbermade tubs, one inside the other, the inner tub needs holes drilled around the perimiter and a couple in the middle, fill the lower tub with about 1 inch of water or until it almost touches the bottom if the other tub....place the heating pad on a piece of wood or cardboard and set the tubs on top of the pad...place items to be incubated in the inner tub and place lid on top.

The reason for the holes in the inner tub it to prevent pressure and humidity buildup, it also allows for humidity to vent into the incubation area, although it's not really needed it does help with maintaining an even temperature through out the entire incubator, center holes allow for drainage of condensate water....water in the bottom helps to dissipate heat and also to maintain even heat distribution with out hot spots....I had used the setup for several years and never had a problem

no fires, no excessive heat, no melting plastic...
