Misuse of the phrase "African-American"
    #2253540 - 01/19/04 05:00 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

African American
A Black American of African ancestry. See Usage Note at black.

I was in the doctors office a few days ago and I saw a sign that really upset me. It said that "African Americans" were at a higher risk of developing said condition. I am personally against the phrase itself because it is very non-specific. The condition, whatever it was, that the poster was talking about is not only a condition that applies to "A black American of African ancestry", but to all "negros" world wide. Using this term to describe black people basically assumes out of existance all of the non-black people from northern Africa.

When it comes to medical science, I'd prefer that they maintain their objectivity and post the truth rather than the PC version thereof.

They should list probability according to each specific african tribe.

They should have just put "if ya got a big nose, big lips, curly hair and are dark then you may be at risk". OR use a term that is widly accepted like African American.
Don't get offended by the PC terms, that's what forced people into creating them.

What's funny is that many S. Africans are white.

I wish everyone would just use the term "black." They like it, we like it, it's short, non-offensive, universally understood.... African-American is unnecessary, and as Innvertigo just suggested, propagates ambiguities.

Calling all black people "African American" is like calling all white people European American.
Being black shouldn't make a person "African" any more than being white should make a person European!!!
Talk about racism..........my wife just started college and for the life of us we can't find any scholarships for just white folk. There seem to be plenty for "minorities" whether they can pass an SAT or not.
Go figure.
The medical thing is like saying that because I'm Cherokee, German, and Swede....I'm going to be an alcoholic of major proportions.

Black confuses us white people. Because....You arent REALLY black, are you? If we could call you brown...but that sounds offensive, doesnt it?

While, if white people stay out of the sun, we DO indeed turn white.

Then it's not really a big deal.

Reminds me of an interview I read about where an American presenter was speaking to Kriss Akabusi (UK athlete) after he won a medal in 91.

"So, Kriss, what does this mean to you as an African-American?"

"I'm not American, I'm British"

"Yes, but as a British African-American ..."

"I'm not African. I'm not American. I'm British."

--------------------
The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

Here's something I read that Whoopi Goldberg said once.

(Not an exact quote)

"So what would you say to other African-American..."

"I'm not an African-American. My parents weren't from Africa, my grandparents weren't from Africa, my great-grandparents weren't from Africa. Just call me black."

Can't we loose the hyphens already? This simply furthers the racial divide.

I think that black, white, mexican, asian, oriental, all are terms that are respectful and quite correct. Even in the "olden days" the word "nigger" wasn't used intentionally as a demeaning term.

Uh, yeah it was. "Negro" wasn't a slur, "nigger" was.

From the American Heritage Dictionary....
"nigger - vulgar- A Negro or member of any dark skinned people. An offensive term used derogatorily."

and a term I don't allow in my house, even from my wife.
