Arpeggios

I've been working on these lately on my 6-string, if you don't know what they are don't bother posting. Anyways, I've been fingerpicking chords on my acoustic and am interested in doing the sweep-like arpeggios on my electric. It's hard to explain.. listen to Yngwie Malmsteen, he uses them all the time.

It's almost like he's just playing a whole scale quickly, in a sweep-like fashion. I keep saying that and it sounds dumb, but I can't think of how else to say it. If someone could give me pointers on how to do this, a good exercise or just a lick from a song or whatever, then that'd be pretty sweet. Thanks.

well like many things on guitar they are not that hard to do, but they are amazingly difficult to do  right  :tongue2:

The only advice I can think of is slowww down!
My crutch in music hasalways been jumping ahead of myself..
and learning wrong is hard to correct.
Off the top of my head I can think of a cool starter in "the call of Kthulu" by Metallica in Am

sorry but alot of things I have read before in music are just so SIMPLE, just play and learn!

I remember my little brother printing pages off the internet on how to "slap" his bass strings, I was like........."watch me or other people, and develop your own style if you want"

really what is someone going to tell you????????

they might use alot of words and phrases but it will be simple , trust me, just "sweep", sorry if I pissed you off AND didnt help you , that wasent the goal :smile:

thanks for the advice guys! i'm working on it at the moment.

shaggy - i can play call of kthulu, but thats not the kind of arpeggios i'm talking about. it probably has some solos involving them, but i only learned the cool intro.

psilo- i'm not pissed, thanks for the advice dude. is there any song i could practice on? i just want to work on something to get the hang of it then try to make up my own.

Ever seen Malmsteen's "Arpeggios From Hell" video? It's fucking amazing. I'd also suggest his "Hot Licks" video. He slows things down and shows you all kinds of techniques. Have you ever heard of Jason Becker? He's an unbelievable composer/guitarist. His solo album Perpetual Burn is truly a masterpiece. His work with Marty Friedman in Cacophony is also something to look into. They had two albums - Speed Metal Symphony and Go Off. If you like sweep picking you'll love their stuff. Unfortunately Jason has ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) and can't pick up a guitar anymore. He has lived far longer than his doctors thought he would. Yes Jason Becker and Marty Friedman were both masters of the guitar.. and especially the sweeping arpeggios in their prime.. the Hot Licks videos are very good and you can rent them from a lot of places.
It's a shame about Jason Becker though ..:sad:... speed metal symphony came out when he was 17? That shit is amazing. And he got the disease when he was 20  :frown:

I've seen part of Arpeggios From Hell, it's very cool. Theres a lot of good Malmsteen stuff on kazaa, but I can never figure out how to play any of it. Maybe I should actually buy the video..

I've been doing a lot of fingertapping lately, too.. this is like a whole new world for me in terms of guitar. Ever since I started playing (about 3 years ago), I've been playing a lot of metal stuff... but mainly just power chords.

I blame the complexity of what I play now on two bands, In Flames and Tool. If you haven't heard In Flames (I heard about them on the shroomery, from Fireworks_God), definitely check them out. Fuck, they blow my mind.
