BIID is a thing. Most rational people do not put chemicals into their eyes or have their limbs crushed just to "get attention". Some believe that the disorder is caused by some part of their brain recognizing a body part as a foreign object. Kind of like how the body's immune system will sometimes mistakenly attack joints or organs.

As with most things in the brain it isn't very well understood yet. But it is obviously a serious condition.

Can someone who isn't overreacting here (aka not eehoo) please explain to me why what this woman did is different from what post op transsexuals have done?  Her motivation was identical to theirs, and the outcome is essentially the same- transitioning from a body that doesn't fit your psyche into that does. 

(I've got nothing against transsexuals and am not trying to be derisive towards them.  I'd like to understand why so many people respond negatively to this but a lot of the same people would support transsexuals.)

As someone who struggles with a disability, there is basically nothing I would prefer for my life than to be free of it.
Similarly, have never met an individual who is genuinely thankful to have lost his or her limbs. 
Even if we define ourselves as "differently able" as opposed to disabled, it is ultimately just trying to find some peace of mind in hell.
There are apparently fully able people that actively want to be disabled, but their thought process seems entirely foreign to me.  It is difficult for me to frame such a desire as anything other than a pursuit of disability payments, but you mentioned earlier in the thread that she was not approved for them, which makes sense to me.

It, possibly, simply comes down to my view that genders are equal, but my disability leaves me less capable than a normal person.
A transgender individual is making a transition across, but a transable individual is making a transition down to something that most are seeking a way up from.

Am not necessarily holding a negative view of people calling themselves transable, but I view them as simply engaging in an extreme form of body modification.
Whether or not body mods are tied to individual identity is a different can of worms.

You make great points, and I mostly agree with you, but I think I might have some insight into the other side.



1- First, there is society's general distaste for anyone who is different, and whose thought process is difficult to comprehend. But this one's obvious.


2- People who are transsexual want to transition from one gender to another. Now, this may eliminate their ability to reproduce (they may not have done so anyway, depending on their preference) but it leaves them as a functioning and generally unimpaired human being.

Look at the messages of society, and you'll see that health and functionality are held in high esteem. People who are more capable than others in some way are looked up to. And the reverse is sometimes true as well. This concept is even present in cultural artifacts like the saying "The body is a temple." As such, many people hold great disdain for those who purposely or carelessly harm themselves in some way. You want proof of this-- look no further than the way people view drug addicts. Even addicts who are perfectly functional in society are looked down on. Looked down on for A- Potentially doing harm to themselves ("Waste of a life.." etc) B- For not being able to cope with life, without the crutch of drugs (e.g. "Addicts are weak.")


Even with most addicts, the potential harm done to themselves is a secondary side effect of the primary goal-- that is, getting high or "coping." But here we have a person who is physically relatively healthy and able-bodied, whose actual goal is a reduction in functioning. This is difficult for most to understand, and even harder for some to accept.


This concept is probably much stronger with religious people who have a specific view of how things were "Made to Be" (by God) and in Christians specifically, who are admonished in the bible to not purposely scar their bodies, or even get tattoos.


3- The above point is probably made worse for "conservatives" and those with old school values. Able-bodied people can work and contribute to society. Those who are too severely disabled can not. So I'm sure some people will see an issue like this, and their first thought will be "Awesome-- another drain on society." (Several such people being among us in this thread. ) 


4- It also might be seen (by some) as insensitive toward those who do not choose to be disabled.

Almost like the little upper middle class white kid who listens to hip hop, so he thinks he wants to be black, cause "it's cool" with no real consideration for what those people actually have to go through. I'm not saying that's the case (especially if she did the "simulated blindness" thing) -- but some people may perceive it this way.

Then again, disabled people do often get sympathy from many, whereas typically people get far less sympathy just for being a "minority." But there are people out there who cause themselves psychological suffering, or create drama, just to gain the reward of sympathy. Humans are weird like that.


tl;dr


People tend to fear and hate what they don't understand. Society also looks up to the capable, and down on the weak. And some people who lack empathy will automatically hate anyone they might see as a "drain on society." Transgender people may be difficult for some to understand, but they are still able-bodied, and merely choosing to be "different."
