Woman ends life to donate eyes to blind sons

http://in.rediff.com/news/2005/mar/20eye.htm

A 37-year-old mother, dejected at being unable to locate eye donors for her two blind sons, ended her life so that her eyes could be given to them.

Tamilselvi was found hanging at her residence in Kodungaiyur in north Chennai on Saturday. The police rushed to the spot and recovered the body, which was later sent for post-mortem.

Tamilselvi had got herself registered with an eye bank in Chennai and had stated her wish to donate her eyes to her sons, who are studying in a school for the visually-impaired in the city.

The eye bank authorities removed her eyes as per her instructions. They will conduct the operations on her sons soon.

What, are her sons going to have one eye each or something?

i remember a high-school physics teacher showing us a video about research into using fiber-optics to "simulate" an eye, thus creating options for blind people to bypass their screwed up optic nerve and still see.

but that was really in a research stage, and they didn't seem very confident that it would ever be anything more than that...

still, though, there was a part where they were talking about creating 360-degree vision - by having a fiber-optic "eye" wrapped all around your head. think what that would do to your perspective - whereas now we have this around 180-degrees, with our sight coming out of the front of our face, with 360-degree vision you wouldn't have a "center" that the sight comes out of - or you would, but wouldn't see it yourself... see what i mean? freaky shit. :whoa:

The cornea is the only part that I know of that can be transplanted.

What kind of news is that? It doesn't seem like a fake news site, why would they have bogus news? Obviously her eyes are not going to be transplanted, that doesn't happen. Even if they were they would just be gross dead eyes, one per son. Lol.

On ripleys believe it or not, they wired a camera into a guys eyes. I would imagine eye transplants are possible after seeing this.

I do remember them saying though, this operation couldnt be performed on someone born blind. The person had to lose their eyesight.

indeed. they "found her hanging" after no telling how long she had been there, plus they were able to get her to a hospital and remove her eyes and ready them for surgery, all before they clouded over. especially when the eyes are one of the first things to start to rot. bullshit.
