Hey, anybody use (program) PIC (or any other brand) microcontrollers? I've just picked up a book on them, they seem damn cool. Limitless applications.

Weird, I just finished mech eng and we did nothing with microcontrollers

I did a lot of coding with the microPICS back in the early 90's. They are my favorite microcontroller series to work with. Very easy to program, great instruction set, very powerful chipset with a lot of programmable functionality on the IO pins.

Always a good idea to spend a few extra dollars on the UV eraseable ones when developing on the non electrically eraseable models, I know the 12c series arent.

I've used those in class as a side project to make cars and other vehicles which stopped and turned when they hit into something. They weren't too bad for small applications, but I liked basic stamps more.

I understand Basic compilers for PICs have made basic stamps pretty much obsolete

Bleck... why in the world would you give up assembly for basic when programming a microcontroller?

they wanna make those cool little LED's flash!!!!! that's all we ever used them for in my mech eng class. of course i was a freshman at the time. maybe there's something more too them.

You can pretty much use them for anything. Robotics are the only application I've messed with them for, but the applications are endless. BASIC stamps are more expensive anyways, I just thought they were easier because there was an interface on the card. All you had to do was just hook up servos and other components, but with PICs, you buy the socket and mount it on a board then customize.

I have designed very low power motor controllers that enforce constant velocity or constant current using PICs. I have also designed a few robitic control circuits based around PICs as well. Oh, and I did a real time data aquisition controller too. They are very easy to use and fun to play with.

How much would it cost to build a microcontroller comparable to the Lego Mindstorms PCX microcontroller?
They just announced that they are going to stop making them.

Pretty damn simple and not very expensive. There are many different flavours of the PIC, so the price can change quite a lot. Some of them have more or less built in memory, some come with built in serial lines, some are program once, while others are UV eraseable, while others are electronically erasable, etc.
The largest part of the cost would be the programming software/hardware. I have no idea what the current prices are. I would guess you could get started with a complete kit for under $100. Most of the stuff I designed used the electronically eraseable version of the chips, and I added extra hardware to my board designs to allow the chip to be reprogrammed without having to remove it from the board. (Switch out a jumper to supply 12v instead of 5v and it goes into programming mode.)
Almost every pin on the pic (other than ground and vcc) are programmable. You can define it as an input line, output line, open collector (in some cases), or tristate (in some other cases). They make serial bus memory chips that work with the pic. It takes a single pin from the pic to control, read, and write.

I'm taking beginning programming (C++) this semester and electromechanical/robotics is my major.
I won't be messing with microcontrollers for probably another year or two.

Hmm..
I would suggest you look towards the atmel family which is a much better microcontroller and similar price. No UV required, fully erasable. Far better performance, good tools etc.
PICS are really quite dodgy, they have been around for years upon years but the atmels are far better and just as common.
I wish I could type more but my stomach is on fire right now, (Cook your chicken properly).

Please provide some reasons why Atmels are any better than PICs? There are plenty of electronically erasable PICs to choose from Also Microchip provides MPLAB, an excellent free development package for PICs

If I step up from a PIC, I move to FPGAs or standard cell ASICs, though it has been a while since I have done any chip level design.
