I watched a documentary about this mental illness like back 10 years or so ago on The Learning Channel.  It's a real mental disorder, but most people want to lose a limb and eventually find some doctor SOMEWHERE in the world that will amputate their hand or leg or whatever without medical reasons.  Never heard of someone wanting to lose an entire sense though.
But this has NOTHING to do with the current media and social fascination with transgender people.
For this woman, having her vision is the problem and look she's not like some teenager that doesn't understand.  She's probably been obsessed, literally obsessed, with being blind for decades and the thought consumes her all day every day.  If she desires it that badly and has worked through the entire thing with her shrink over the course of years then I don't see how the shrink helping his patient safely through the procedure instead of her just doing it by herself without any supervision is the worst thing in the world.
In the end, she is a happier person because of it and no one else was hurt.  I'd say the result is successful.

This woman was on Dr Phil yesterday.  I watched it.  Frankly, there was not one thing behind her motivation that wasn't something I've heard transsexuals say.  I honestly saw a complete parallel between what she did and people who get sexual reassignment surgery.  Anyone else see this?
