I'm a bit pressed for time, so I'll make this a quick one.

Thanks for the kind words. I wouldn't dare to grow Lithops out in the open, as our weather is completely reversed to their watering needs. Few basic rules:

a) you start watering your Lithops when the previous year leaves are PAPER DRY; not dry-ish, not wilted, nor disappearing: PAPER DRY. That should be somewhere from March to May for most species.
b) Lithops are fine when the surface of the leafs (the "window") show the relief of their markings; they need water when they are really wrinkled; when they look like the plants in my photo, they are more than all right.
c) in places where it gets REALLY hot, Lithops will stop growing and need no water during the peak of summer - say, mid-June to August.
d) after flowering - or, if they don't flower, somewhere from September to late October - stop watering. And I mean, STOP! Not a drop, not a spray, nada until the previous year's leaves are PAPER DRY. The explanation for this: during winter, Lithops are indeed actively growing, but in a very particular way. They are sucking everything from the previous' year leaves and ANY drop of water they get at this time will stop this process and you'll end up with two pairs and an ugly plant. Fortunately, it will eventually outgrow it, but resist the temptation.

Bottom line: watch your plant, it'll tell when it needs water. If it does and it's watering season, do it - water deeply, let water come out from the bottom of the pot. Otherwise, refrain from doing it. You'll be all right if you adhere to this.

Sowing Lithops is exactly the same as for cacti except for a few things: seeds will come up readily and will NOT tolerate too long inside a baggy, take them out when germination stops (2-4 weeks). After germination, give them all the light you can (for your climate, that should be full sun) and treat them like cacti seedlings for the first couple of seasons including winter. If you have enough light to keep them ticking over winter, do it. By the end of their second season, start treating them like adults, that is harden them for winter and keep them dry then. Use DEEP pots, Lithops have 4-6" tap roots that need space to develop. If all you've ever seen are plants with that hairy fiber bundle for roots, that's because they're babies overfed to attain salable size in the least amount of time, a year maybe. They're extra delicate because they mostly have no tissue, just water, and they can take very little stress. Once again, pay VERY close attention to the plants and you'll pull them through.

Soil as for cacti, feed sparingly (they don't need much), give a good few weeks for them to acclimate after repotting (spraying only!) and accept that sometimes they will die for no reason. Heat they can take, but stale hot air will kill them instantly. Keep that air moving!

Could you possibly take a picture of your set up you have all your cacti in so we can see what it is that seems to work so well for you?

I will try and take some this weekend, buddy.

Hey LSoares:hi:

I have a question.

I took a pic of a couple of my Lithops a few hours ago and 1 seems to be flowering. I've had them setting out in absolute full sun for the past 2 and a half to 3 months too and have watered just as I have all of my trichs.

Would you mind if I posted a pic here for you to look at? If you think it best I can post it in my pictures thread but it just seems like no one is paying attention to that one any more.

As long as you can check it out I'll be happy.

One is flowering and has been watered frequently even though the weather is cooling off a good bit.

Yep, that's a flower coming along. It will be yellow.

After the flower dies, stop watering the plants until spring comes and the old leaves become completely dry. The surface of the flowering plant is what you should aim at, you can see the imprint on the surface of the windows.

(they are, I believe, L. aucampiae. But they can also be L. lesliei)

Nice, do you have any plants you put out year round?  I'd like to get a few cold-wet hardy cacti going.  Those escobaria are kind of hard to come by but I think they would survive.  Sorry for the threadjack Zed.  I'm still waiting on your pro lithops tips.

Damn, I missed this one. I keep lots of plants out in the open, year round, but I don't think it can be of use to you. I'm in zone 9b, I think, and it rarely freezes here. I can tell you most cereoid and opuntioid are kept outside, the same goes for Parodia and would probably apply to Frailea. If you have a means of keeping them out of our winter rains (when it rais, it usually pours) most plants would be ok in our weather.

Heya Zed, and others.. I do not want to Hijack your thread.. But since people were asking and showing Lithops, I thought I would share a couple that I have started. They are, Lithops localis v. Prince Albert. As something fun, I decided to pot them into tin cans. Yes, they are the literal pun, (Prince Albert in a can).. and yes.. I have Prince Albert in a can). LOL there are drain holes in the bottom of the can for drainage.

Hope you all have a giggle or 2.

Here is my Lithops verriculosa - coming into wonderful flower - had it a few years now - it has defied all the ´experts´ and grown into a very nice large clump in my Mediterranean climate, where it lives outdoors all year - gets rained on in winter and all the things it shouldn´t.  It just doesn´t care that the climate is wrong for it.

I'd like to warn everyone reading this thread that they should beware of what advice they follow. There's been a lot of bullshit thrown around lately, some extraordinary claims with no shred of backing evidence have been made and I'd hate for anyone to be fooled and have plants damaged or lost because of other people's lack of attention, knowledge, sense, consideration, etc., especially in a thread bearing my monicker.

I TOTALLY agree with you, LSoares.  An awful lot of bullshit is thrown about.  But could I just say that any advice I give is, as far as is humanly possible, backed up by appropriate pics I have taken myself of my own plants - A lot of the bullshitters can´t say that!!!!!!
I do become a little impatient with those who continually give masses of ´advice´ but with little or no photographic evidence of their results.

Why are we here.. what is the purpose of the ethnobotanical garden?

Is it just to show off? and Brag??. . Or is it to have something positive to contribute.

Regardless of what I post, I try to be respectful of people because it is a community. I try to think that there may be someone who knows (nothing) about plants in general or cacti.. but is maybe thinking of growing, or thinking of starting a grow. That person, (who I think of), would need to be armed with as much useful and helpful information as possible.

People reading the posts here come from all over the world. We all live in different climates and rainfall, humidity..temp variations etc. I can say what works for me, but that may not work for other people. I sometimes try and offer up things that I have tried, in order to help people get better germination or survival.

IMO, THAT is why I am here . . to be helpful. Being rude and disrespectful helps no one, and doesn't contribute much to the community, other than animosity and bad feelings.

I just thought I would put that out there..

And, Thank you Zed for your continued advice, and willingness to help people. without the help and concern of some people, some plants would die. Some people's grows, would suffer.

I urge people to consider what they post. Is this helping anyone? Is it vanity... Or is it something else entirely.

Dude, might I proffer a little bit of advice?  It is general etiquette to not spam threads that are started as growlogs dedicated to single member's collection with pictures of your own plants, nice as they may be.  As this thread is dedicated to Lsoares' collection, unless you have specifically asked about a certain plant or are showing it to make a point about something germane to the discussion like when Spaceman posted his lithops and was asking if it was going to flower, it's not polite to just post a bunch of pics of your plants to show off or try to out-do him.

You have a great collection and we'd all like to see more pictures of it, but you seem to not grasp the etiquette of where to post them without seeming confrontational and aggressive.  Start a thread of your own showing off your collection and I'm sure you'll amass quite a following as I always like to see pictures of your plants.  But please, keep the one sided pissing contest you've tried to start with Zed out of the thread he started to share his plants, if you must be antagonistic, at least have the decency to do it on the public threads where it can be passed off as banter.

Here are some threads you should know about where you could be posting pictures of your plants without looking like a dick.  If none of the existing threads suit your purposes, then make a new thread of your own.  We are a close-knit and friendly community here in the EG, there is no reason for the aggressive tone you've taken from the start and frankly if you want people to accept you into the community here you're going to have to learn how to get along with everybody else.

Arent you the one that can grow mature sized flowering lophs in two years but never provided a pictorial growlog and continues to brag about it in half of his posts? or am I mistaking you with someone else?
Advice and pics are 2 different things, that are not correlated in the way you use it.
Till today all the advice i red from you sounds like to me :
" Hey look at this plant, its fucking huge! yep, it's much better than yours. Look at my spanish climate! it's just bananas! poor little zone 6b, you will never have such good plants. Oh, those cacti don't need care at all, they will grow fine even if you totally go against their needs. "
( this was intented to be my personal opinion about your advices, and may be not shared by the rest of the community of course)

Now, let aside this, i would gladly ask you to not show off your plants in this thread anymore.
this is a thread intented for Lsoares Plants, and this shall be, you can post all your beautiful exemplars and feel free to brag about them in several other threads like this or this or just create a new one
Now, the fact is that posting here with your plants doesen't break the rules, but it's just a matter of order and respect. Respect for a thread that many of us considers intresting and would like to keep as it is. and order, at the same way I never posted an Astrophytym in the Lophophora thread or a Copiapoa in the Trichocereus thread (it just does make sense)

So why don´t YOU go and look at MY pictorial growlog.

No, you seem to prefer to show what a friendly and welcoming member of this community you are by calling me a dick !!!!

I just find a load of envy and hostility in this forum - is it worth coming here just to feed the trolls??

You must indeed be mistaking me with someone else.

Go and look at my pictorial growlog.

And what is the point in starting a thread in a public forum if you object to other people making relevant contributions?

A friendly community?  Nah, just two or three moaners.

The point is that your contributions aren't relevant when you post them randomly in threads where they don't belong.  Your plants are nice and if you post pictures of them in the designated, relevant threads for those plants it will make it easier for people to find pictures of the plants they want to see and it will contribute to the quality of the threads.  And yes, this is a friendly community, if you find it unwelcoming it's because you don't bother to read the rules and you have no idea what the decorum is, and when you're politely informed that you're not following the proper etiquette you get defensive and hostile.  I'd like avoid putting you on ignore as while your personality is abrasive I do enjoy your pictures when you manage to put them in the right places, so I'm trying to give you some time to learn how it works around here and some friendly advice on how your behavior is somewhat offputting, but if you're too stupid to figure out basic politeness and are just going to troll the EG making drama where there used to be none, I suppose I'll have to.
