Help please :( Mycelium
    #2230307 - 01/09/04 02:55 AM (20 years, 3 months ago)

Well its January 8th and my jars were innoculated on the 27th of December.. So its been 12 days and my jars have been barely progressing for the past few days and this far they've only colonized about 1/4 of the way :frown:

I used TONS of spores on these jars doesnt that make them colonize faster then normal???

I've been incubating at 79 degrees, its BRF - verm substrate... constant darkness... currently the jars are breathing through the innoculation holes and i do have the dry vermiculite layer on top of each jar.

I just raised the temperature to 85 degrees hoping it will trigger the growth of the mycelium.. Is there anything anyone can recommend? Should I lower the temp again?  Should i take ALL the foil off? I really want this first project to be a success without any contams

thanks :frown:

When did you raise the temp?

I've found 82-84 degrees F works best for me (well, for WBS jars) - my first BRF experiment was only 78-79 and took forever to colonize, and I lost half to contams, probably a bit to do with how long it took.

i raised the temp 10 minutes ago hehe.. do you think i should take the foil off or do you always just leave the innoculation holes for air

Double check to make sure you got the substrate mixture right.

If you used fine grade verm or packed it tightly it will go slower. Nothing much you can do now just keep the temp up so that the substrate is at 86F. I assume you have half pints and not too many for the first time so 85F should do. If you feel like the foil is inhibiting air exchange take it off. The dry laying is there to allow air exchanges without introducing contams.

Good luck

Thanks.. About the vermiculite though, the package i have doesn't mention a grade =/ I'm supposed to use middle or middle-fine grade right?

I have a VERY strong feeling its the air exchange that is the problem only I also have a very strong feeling that if I take the foil off Im gonna have a visit with some pink mycelium..

actually, I have heard various things on teh grade to use but I never messed with it too much till moving on to grains. I could only ever find fine which works but seemed slower than the one time I did find coarse. I think middle would be the best. Definately look into the air exchange

Slow colonizing often mean too high humidity in substrate , maybe its ur problem .
