Narrow mouth quart jars, how to get to substrate??
    #591403 - 03/27/02 09:51 PM (21 years, 10 months ago)

I went out to buy quart jars, and got the kerr that have the smaller mouth. But if you go to the micron magick website, under the illustration of how well filter discs work, they are using those same type of jars. The substrate is birdseed, am I going to have a problem getting the substrate out? Please don't tell me I'm gonna have to take a hammer to em!!! Thanks!!!

Birdseed and similar whole grain jars are shaken before being used and broken into individual kernals. They are poured out and cased or maybe used as spawn for similar substrate. Like vermiculite and flour jars the substrate is not taken out as a whole.

Wipe a large spoon with alcohol.....let it dry.
Spoon it out.... I use the same jars for Rye grain.

I find that you can usually shake rye grain in to individual kernals, however, if you have left it invitro for a little too long, then the mycelium can hold the kernals together so strongly that you shake your arm to death. Then its time to take out that spoon.

Birdseed, having such smaller kernals, I find usually wont shake out to individual kernals,
