Growing oysters on coffee grounds

I would like to grow oysters on coffee grounds.
Should the coffee be pasteurized or sterilized?
How wet does it need to be? Can you make a log out of it?

How do you guys do it?

this is why coffee grounds are cool:
1. you can get them for free.
2. in large quantities.
3. all at once.
4. it comes at just about the right moisture content.
5. oysters like em.

if they drip water, that's too much, drain them some.
you cannot store coffee grounds over any length of time (well, a few days, in the fridge, maybe) lest they turn GREEN.
i have only used them half and half with woodchips and sawdust.

The key is to get some place to save them for you from an entire shift. this could easily be 4-5 gallons of coffee grounds, which is quite a bit. when you pick up a batch after a shift, most of it will still be warm. it is pasteurized during the brewing process, saving you time and effort. mix with wet chips/dust and inoculate with grains. i have fruited two strains of ostreatus and hypsizygus ulmarius from this mixture. some fruited in buckets, some fruited from the ground after i buried them there.
saving the grounds in a container only diminishes the value gained }(for free) by the pasteurization.
talk to the manager of the coffee shop. make it easy for them to do the favor for you. go and remind them at the beginning of the shift. provide the bucket. the paper filters are fine, don't worry, oysters eat them too.

You can store the coffee grounds in the freezer till you have time to handle them ...
And adding some wood chips is a good idea - the fine coffee powder does not let a lot of air trough and this stalls the growth of the mycelium ( at least in my experience ).

i saved mine up for a couple months (i only drink a pot or two a day).... just spread em out so they will dry. of course you have to re-hydrate them.

i used a filter patch bag to steralize them before innoculating them...

It also takes the strain awhile to colonize the coffee because it is a little different than what it would normally eat. Make sure you clone one of the coffee mushrooms. You can store the coffee strain on distilled water. If you use that strain, it will go much quicker. I have a strain that's a third generation coffee feeder. If you are interested I will send you a plate. It is a P. osteatus I cloned from a wild , warm weather strain in Georgia.

This is a great little science experiment. Not great for producing large amount of oysters for consumption, but a neat process to watch and a great way to recycle your used grounds.

The easiest way to do this is to produce some oyster spawn, using some sort of grain mixture. This can be as simple as culturing out your oysters on rye berries or millet. Once you have colonized spawn, say a bag's worth or even a 1/2 pint or pint then you can begin.

Find a small tupperware container and whip it clean with soap and water. Dump a small amount of spawn into the bottom and cover loosly with the lid for 24 hours to allow it to recolonize. Then on a daily basis dump your used grinds into the tupperware. It might be neccesary to lightly squeeze the grinds while still in the filter to remove any excess moisture, however I've found that if you allow the grinds to sit for a few hours after making your brew then they are usually dry enough to dump right in.

The oyster mycelium will consume the grinds and pretty much keep up with your introduction of new material. You may need to dump more of your primary spawn in "layers" to allow the growth to stay continuous, so save some of your primary spawn material in the beginning for this (just leave it in the jar or bag and it will be fine).

Once you've filled the tupperware to it's brim with grinds and spawn and the oysters have colonized throught it you can induce fruiting by placing it in your chamber or just putting a makeshift humidity tent over it. Remember that oysters need much more air exchnage than most other types of mushroom species.

How much air exchange and humidity do you give to your oysters ?
I have some p.pulmonaris on coffee grounds in my living room with some clear plastic over their culture tray right now. But the fruit bodies only develop thick stems and almost no cap. I guess I should offer them more fresh air and a higher humidity.

psilocyber, that is cool as hell. I had often wondered if you could make a sort of equilibrium with coffee grounds, but never tried. I will have to give it a try.

Ragadinks, Paul Stamets recommends for p.pulmonarius
Pinhead formation:
50-75 degrees F, 95%-100%, 5-7 Fresh air exchange
Fruitbody development:
65-75 degrees F, 85%-90%, 5-7 Fresh air exchange

And by the way psilocyber, you had a kick ass idea that i'll surely give a try! My only concern is the weird form the oysters will deliver by fruiting on a horizontal surface, just as good with a queer look i guess!

Do you have any idea of any other method that could be used for growing oysters on coffee grounds but with a vertical surface for fruitbody development? Anyone tried making a log of lets says 50% coffee and 50% wood chips or straw? I presently have a project of 50/50 coffee and straw in a tray that will be slanted 45 degrees for fruiting. What do you think?

You could maybe get them to fruit on a vertical surface if you line a five gallon bucket with a trash bag or something, fill the bag as per psilocyber's suggestion, remove the bag (which would be round and firmly shaped if fully colonized, and poke holes in the side of the bag. Maybe.

I put the coffee grounds in a big black plastic bag which again I put into a huge laundry basket ( 45 liters / ~10 gallons ). The laundry basket has holes in each side. Through this holes I puncture the plastic bag inside and the oysters are going to grow out through them. So they are easy to harvest. It's a pity that I have no digi cam right now so that I could show you.

Malformed oyster fruit bodies are usually the result of restricted air. Rip some big holes in the plastic bag you have draped over the tray and mist more frequently, that should help things out a bit.

To get a horizontal surface for fuiting you can always 'dump' out the substrate from the tupperware container. We use the small quart sized disposable ziplocks, so the resulting "cake" is nearly sqaure. Dump it out of the tupperware and leave it exposed on a plate and covered by a loose bag (or pop right into your chamber).

Growing oysters is about as simple taking a shit. :smile:

have got a camera now from a friend and thought I could show my oyster setup. Its a big laundry basket with holes in the side. I just have stuffed the coffee grounds inside a black plastic bag inside the basket. It took about a month till the first pins of p.pulmonaris have shown. You can see that the stems of the mushrooms are big and the caps are too small for oysters. I think this is due to the fact that I keep them in my living room because outside the air is too cold cause it's winter. Inside the house it's warm but the air is very dry. So I have to put a plastic around the basket to keep the humidity high. But that again leads to CO2 build up. But they taste very good anyway :smile:

Nice flush!!! Too bad for the high CO2-concentration though, but still impressive. I'm gonna go buy a laundry basket too, now that I've seen this.

I have realized that this species really needs a lot of light. The mushrooms that are on the side of the basket that is directed towards the window develop much larger caps. The are very phototropic - that means the caps are growing toward the light. Maybe I can get a camera so that I can show you some pics of them.
