I suspect Koods lives in a part of the country where there's a lot of petty crime like muggings and the like, and people all distrust each other to a larger extent. Less urban places tend to hold a higher value on a communal sense of trust and respect, and they consider burglars and the like to be a threat to the community at large. When a guy breaks into your house and threatens you and your livelihood/stuff with physical harm, then stopping him is thought of as a personal right and a public service because a burglar at large is dangerous to everybody. As long as people are reasonably competent, then legally empowering them to defend themselves makes the community safer and stronger in principle because it lessens the demand on the police. If a guy with a weapon breaks into somebody's house and threatens people with a weapon, and the police were in the same situation, then they would shoot the guy. Where I live the response time for the police is something like 25-30 minutes. I can't rely on the police for protection like people can in the city, and if a home invader shows up, I guarantee you that I'm much safer with a gun than without one, and I'm glad I'm allowed to make that decision for myself.

we should admire people who've protected themselves from home invaders; we also shouldn't admonish but yet exculpate those whom kill their neighbors after thinking they were intruders though they weren't.
