it can take a photon 40,000 years to travel from the core of the sun to the surface, but only 8 minutes to travel the rest of the way to earth.

IIRC it doesn't travel in a straight line from the core to the surface, it just kinda bounces around a lot. Once it leaves the sun, it travels in a straight line.

No.  Photons are particles that travel in a straight line at a specific speed unless they are interfered with.  Where they are likely to be resembles a wave function but photons are discrete particles that have measurable mass and travel at a measurable velocity in a vacuum.
