Disabling touch pad on laptop?

I bought a mouse for my girlfriends laptop because she hates the touch pad. She always hits it when typing and screws up whatever it is she is doing.
If I install the mouse, will the touch pad be automatically disabled? If not, how do I do it?

A carefully placed bullet should do the trick.
-------------------- You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

if you plug the mouse in, the touchpad should turn off on it's own. then when you un-plug the mouse it will come back on.

On the CD with software and drivers from the laptop I had a program that does that.

if you are using windows XP go to control panel and in the mouse settings there should be a tab for the touch pad, some as was stated also have a setting in the bios

And the winner is...
four20snakeman!
However, I learned just to let it work by itself, no additional software needed. When I plugged the mouse it in, it worked, but still prompted me to install drivers, so I did.
I spent the next 3 hours trying to get the computer to boot, even in safe mode. It would start to boot, get to desktop, and before I could do anything, it would restart again. It had somehow managed to disable the keyboard. Finally got it to reboot, removed installed mouse software, and has been smooth sailing ever since.

wow..how could you not know you had a touch pad, there a fairly noticable feature but yea once you get used to it, it's alot better than a mouse for webbrowsing and small things like that
