How to install a different version of windows
    #6067164 -

haven't tried alot of things, just a quick once over. But,

I have windows Media Center on my laptop, i don't like it and i would like to install win. xp on it.

the way i do it on every other machine, is: put disk in and restart pc. (then follow instructions)

this does not work on my pc.

2.) i also had the question... if i do go to XP, would i loose functionaliyt in the front buttons? ie.) play, ff, rew, and volume?

I have a Dell inspiron 6000.

just doesn't boot up through the bios settings... goes straight into media center

(i haven't even gone into the cd drive and d-clicking setup, that's why this question might be premature)

BUT, didn't know if anyone had problems? or if my front buttons would still work?

the bios has to boot before an operating system will, it tell you computer how to communicate with all the hardware... you need to set the disc drive to boot before the hdd.

You need to set it up to boot from CD if you want to do it that way. However, you can run the install from inside Media Centre I believe. Just insert the CD and use the menu that comes up with autorun. You may even be able to upgrade instead of re-install though I'm not sure that I would recommend that.

Similar question:

I have XP Pro installed on a laptop. I want to install Win 2000 however.

Since XP Pro is NTFS, and Win 2000 is FAT 32, I cannot format from the Win 2000 CD. I get the message that "since the XP Pro is a newer file system, setup abilities on the Win 2000 CD are disabled.

I've tried to install Win 2000 on a separate partition and then go back to delete the XP Pro using partition magic, but no avail.

ANy suggestions?

download a windows 98 boot disk

when you get into dos type a: then cd fdisk and it should bring you to a format option, clear the system then try.... Win 2000 can use NTFS also

I would recommend using your XP install CD to quick format the hard drive to NTFS then restart before installation occurs. Then insert your 2000 disc. It does support NTFS and this is actually its default. It should be able to format it but it wont be half as fast the XP CD. Don't forget to delete the partition otherwise you won't be able to format.

I can't use a win 98 boot disk because I don't have an A: drive (I may try burning it to CD though).

I've formatted with the XP Pro CD then switched to the 2000 disc, but I get some weird error screen. I believe this is because the XP pro CD formats the drive as NTFS and win 2000 is FAT.

If I format with the XP Pro CD and Create 2 partitions, I get the option to format in either NTFS of FAT. I've tried using parition magic to install win 2000 on the second partition, but can't seem to do that.

Win2000 supports both FAT32 (not 16 though) and NTFS. Really. It does. It sounds like there could a be a problem with your 2k disc because as it is it should be working. There is little point using a 98 boot disc as it only supports FAT32 and FAT16 but you can try if you like...

i have a question for YOU

i know i didnt like XP when i started using it, but why go down to 2000? sure, just to see if you can or whatever, but comeon. even 98 was cooler than 2000.

i would say so. my dell keyboard has the usual volume knob/shuttle controls and they have all worked on different versions without messing with any thirdparty software. they just relay standard key shortcuts for volume up/down/pause/skip/etc.

i'm unsure why win2k would have any problem with ntfs, since i always used ntfs with it... ntfs has been around forever, just made its way into residential versions of the software in the last 5-6 years...

for whats it's worth, i've been running Vista for a while now. on RC1 currently, and hearing that it's the last test version before public release... ie, %95 finished...

and it kicks ass...

take care,
