Any guitar players out there that can help me with a minor intonation issue?
    #22090474 - 08/14/15 09:36 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Hello. The last time I got my guitar professionally set up/adjusted was about 2 years ago. Their is a minor issue with the intonation of the guitar, so minor that I really don't think I even need to take it to get it adjusted. It would wind up costing me around $30-50 & I'm at the point in my guitar playing where I want to be able to do all these things myself. The problem is my last two string, the high e and b string are slightly out of tune all the time towards the higher pitched frets (going towards the body of the guitar). Even when I tune it to a perfect pitch. Thus I have to tune the high e and b string slightly flat because if I am using the bottom strings I typically only use them on higher pitched frets (towards the 12th fret) When I tune the high e and b string slightly flat the pitch is perfect towards those frets. Can anyone please instruct me how to fix this issue? I have never had to adjust the truss rod myself nor the saddle parts on the bridge but I am guessing that is probably what I'm going to have to do. Before I accidentally mess anything up though I would really like someone else's input that has a little more experience than me. Thank you for any help that you can provide to me. I'd appreciate it.

Weird, when I had intonation issues with my acoustic, I came here asking for answers too!

When was the last time you changed your strings? Someone suggested I put new strings on in my thread, and I thought there was no way that could be it. Needless to say, I put a fresh set on, and intonation disappeared.

yeah strings play quite the role with intonation.  i'm getting some intonation issues on my electric right now, but i know it's the strings cause they are quite old.

Guess I'm going to try a new set of strings then because these ones haven't been changed since the set up, which was approximately 2 years ago by now! A lot of times there will be black looking gook stuff underneath the strings that I can take off if I run a tissue or paper towel underneath the strings but I'm just going to put on a brand new set of strings. Hopefully that will fix the intonation issue. I'll report back wether it does or not so anyone who has a similar issue can see if that fixes the problem. Thanks a lot guys.

The properties of strings change a lot over time, especially if you play enough to get the gook stuff, which is your sweat, dirt and dead skin, which degrades the metal, which causes the properties of the strings to change a lot.

The exact mechanics of it depends on the kind of bridge you have, but generally what you're going to want to do is adjust the part of the saddles that adjusts towards the headstock or towards the butt of the guitar (as opposed to the adjustment that moves the saddle out from the body or towards the body). Just try experimenting with it by adjusting it slightly one way or the other.  Then get the open string tuned try it at the 12 fret.  If it's closer than it was before then you are adjusting it the right direction, if it is worse than it was before you'll need to adjust the saddle the other direction until it is in tune at the nut and the 12 fret.  if this doesn't work might be a more difficult issue like truss rod adjustment.

This guy above me is right. First change the strings but if you still have the problem then make the adjustment on the bridge that moves the string further or closer to the neck.

I would probably check the neck alignment before I would do that personally.  It seems to solve the issue 8 times of out 10.  I used to work in a guitar shop and have seen it solve the issue hundreds of times.  Not saying you guys are wrong, just that it's easier.  Although, you can fuck your neck up too if you don't know what you're doing and start playing around with your truss rod.  Look it up online, you went the neck to be fairly straight, with a slight curve upward.  I'm sure there's got to be some good pics online somewhere, or you can just do it by feel just don't go crazy.
