Does it matter what time of year you graft cacti?

Subject pretty much says it.  I have a few lopho buttons and some pedros to play with.  All have been dormant and had no water for a couple months.  Would it be alright to graft now?  I don't know why it wouldn't work, I think I remember reading somewhere (the nook probably) that it was best to do it as the plants were coming out of dormancy though.  But it seems that would waste some growth time :smile:, and I don't know when I'll be around to do it then.  Anyway, I was wondering if anyone experienced with this sort of thing might have some input.

When full in growth there's much more "cactus blood" in circulation, this is useful because it works like glue. While dormant they don't bleed that much, so there is less chance of luck... that's why people use to water their cacti a couple of days before surgery :wink:

My girl is waiting for spring, despite some new growth (two new pups) on a peruvianus.

She'll probably graft to a small spine so she won't slice her fingers.

First off, the nook is almost THE place to get cactus info. Second, If it will be noticeably healthier and faster to graft in the spring, I'd wait.

For a graft to take, there has to be a connection between the vascular tissue so its able to transport nutrients to support the grafted cactus. If its dormant, its not going to be transporting much at all, so your gonna be much less successful and even if it does work its not gonna grow because its dormant. Just be patient and wait till they start growing in the spring. Your gonna be waiting year(s) before you get anything big, so just be patient.

The main reason I wanted to do it now is because these aren't growing where I stay most of the time, and I don't know when I'll have a chance to come back and graft them this spring. But I suppose I'll wait anyway :\ .

I did a graft onto a little Trich. Spachianus a few weeks ago, and it seems to be slowly failing, I think dormancy of the root stock was to blame. When I cut it, the sap was quite thin and watery, unlike the normal slimy sticky goo that you find.
I did another onto an Opuntia Stenopetala, which had just put out another branch and so was actively growing, and that is doing very well... it's almost caught up with a graft onto a myrtillocactus geometrizans that I had done six weeks previously, after only about 20 days! I'll try and get some pics...

it's best to graft when not dormant in my experience, or just before the breaking of dormancy.

the grafts, when well done usually pick year round but they'll only grow in the growing season (actually they do grow a bit during the dormant season).
like neuro said, just before the breaking of dormancy seems to be the optimum time, at least the time you see more results in less time.
