dog had seizure after redosing flea medication
    #21969439 -

Redosed my 7 year old pekingese last night around 9 making it the second month I've used a product called Spectra Sure. I gave it to him after 3 weeks even though it says to wait 4, but the fleas had came back extremely bad. Anyways, 6 am I wake up and open the bedroom door so he could head to the living room. I turn around at this point to lay down for a bit and I hear yelping.
I shot straight up and went to the living room to find him on his side shaking, yelping for 5 seconds then he goes unconscious. I pick him up, I don't know if that was a dumb decision or not and he's completely limp. I can't feel him breathing I lay him down and after 45 seconds or so he starts shaking and regain consciousness. I think the flea medication is the cause, I gave him a bath just now with dish soap to hopefully get all the medication out of his fur. I'm gonna get ahold of the vet now.
Do you think the flea medication was the cause of this seizure?

As a breed, Pekingese are relatively prone to seizures. Dogs suffer from different types of seizures, with different signs and symptoms. Learn to recognize and respond to a seizure, and you can help your dog recover well from each episode.

My beagle mix had epilepsy and had lots of seizures until they put him on phenobarbital.

My Maltese-poodle had one after we gave her a flea dip.  Apparently there are next to no rules on what they sell at the pet store and small dogs can easily be poisoned by a flea bath.  Sucks when you're just trying to help your dog out only to worry she's gonna fall out.  Poor dogs.

This is the first time this has ever happened, he must've had a grand mal seizure cus he lost consciousness convulsed and pooped. I read on the active ingredient in the flea medication I used and many dogs have had seizures from it. Never using another chemical flea medication on my animals ever again.

Your aunt didn't die from a seizure she died from being extremely unhealthy or a head injury from smashing into the ground or old age.

Nice try though

She died in bed, after having a seizure. I'm not sure how exactly she died, but the seizure caused it.

You die from sleeping on your stomach and asphyxiating. That sudden death shit happens to like one in one billion people. I'd give my left nut if you can actually prove it happened to your aunt.
It's a little asinine to try and teach someone about a disorder they had their whole life.

There's only been 15 documented SUEDP's

"SUDEP accounts for 8-17% of deaths in people with epilepsy"
Its actually not that rare.

No that's not even the whole statistic. But if you want to copy and paste part of it so you seem correct go ahead.

It's 8-17 of deaths caused by epilepsy not in people with epilepsy.

Which isn't even high considering how rare it is you'll die from epilepsy anyways.

Shroomery always has to debate something. From what I heard, coming from my uncle, is that it was related to her epilepsy. He didn't go into detail, he doesn't like to talk about it. That's all I know. I'm not debating something with you when I dont know the details. So I guess my uncles a liar.

Quote:
Central apnea syndromes are characterized by cessation of spontaneous respiratory drive during sleep. Seizures are known to cause central apnea by direct propagation of the electrical discharge to the respiratory center. Episodes of apnea lasting 10-63 seconds, accompanied by a significant fall in oxygen saturation, have been documented. In addition, cardiac arrest can cause secondary cardiopulmonary arrest. So et al documented a case of near-SUDEP due to postictal apnea.[15] These 2 mechanisms may contribute significantly to the pathophysiology of SUDEP.

Asphyxiation secondary to an obstructive cause has been postulated to play a role in the deaths of patients who were found in a prone position at the time of death. Several investigators reported the prone position more frequently than statistically expected (eg, 81%,[13] 71%[10] ). The prone position may affect ventilation by obstructing the upper respiratory tract as well as increasing the chances of aspiration. In addition, cases of laryngeal spasm and stridor after a seizure has subsided have been reported.[16] In unsupervised patients, this might have contributed to death after a seizure.

Neurogenic pulmonary edema has been reported following a variety of neurologic conditions, including epilepsy. Neurogenic pulmonary edema has been documented in 84% of patients in whom autopsy was done following SUDEP. The underlying mechanism for neurogenic pulmonary edema seems to include a massive alpha-adrenergic response, generalized vasoconstriction, and pulmonary hypertension. In addition, the high protein content of the alveoli is indicative of severe damage to the endothelial membranes that leads to increased pulmonary permeability. These findings also indicate that the terminal event lasted longer than a few minutes.

Tl;dr it doesn't happen to healthy people.

No I didn't say that it could have been related to her epilepsy. But she didn't die from the seizure.
