looks like they're training their dogs to sniff out shrooms too, contrary to what a lot of people are saying

Man convicted for traveling with hallucinogens on pike

A Vermont man who was a passenger in car transporting hallucinogenic mushrooms on the Ohio Turnpike was convicted yesterday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

Robin Johnson, 31, of Brattleboro, Vt., pleaded no contest to one count of aggravated possession of drugs. Judge Charles Wittenberg found him guilty.

Johnson and Andrew Florey were indicted after troopers found 23 pounds of "magic mushrooms" in a leased Chevy Lumina that Mr. Florey was driving Jan. 3, 2002, on the turnpike near Toledo Express Airport. At the time, the seizure was the largest amount of the hallucinogen ever confiscated in Ohio. The drugs had a street value of $73,600.

Mr. Florey of Putney, Vt., also was indicted on a count of aggravated possession of drugs. Judge Wittenberg issued a warrant for his arrest a year ago when he didn't show up for trial in Common Pleas Court.

Ian English, a county assistant prosecutor, said the eastbound car was clocked at 75 mph in a 65-mph zone, and drug-sniffing dogs alerted troopers to the presence of drugs. The mushrooms were found in garbage bags in a duffel bag in the trunk.

Johnson, who will be sentenced Jan. 6, could be sent to prison for two to 8 years.

I would bet that it's more likely that there was either pot in the car that the dogs alerted to, or the cops gave the dogs some signal to alert, just so they could legally search.

Yup, this was a popular case online since they claimed the dogs alerted them. There's way to many factors that could of came into play here to say that they are indeed trained to find mushrooms.

And what is the moral of this story. Maybe if you are going to drive around with over $70,000 worth of drugs in your car it might be a good idea not to drive 10 mph over the speed limit, or either invest in a good radar detector or a CB or something.

yeah, they most likely smelled some weed instead of the shrooms. Or the cops are lying.

According to this article, the average "street price" of shrooms is about $25 and eigth or $200 an ounce... sounds about right I guess.

If I were driving with any kind of illegal substances, I would be damn sure to drive like an old man, and stay in the slow lane, no matter what. And I would hide the illegal substances in some crevice or part underneath my vehicle.

I thought up an idea a while back to install potatoe guns under a car with a switch inside the cab. If I think i'm gonna get pulled over then I hit the switch when they can't see. Contraband flies hundreds of feet away.
problem is what if it launches on it's own.

heheh, good idea.... until the cop notices that **POOF** under your car and a garbage bag traveling a hundred feet per second flying away from your ride.... LOL!! I could just see that on the next episode of Cops...

I guess if you fired it before he got close and it was night, that might work, though. Course you could always just make sure you're obeying the law to a T (this is key... don't be high or drunk or speeding or uninsured or have expired tags or have any reason that the car might be unsafe or look like a homocidal maniac hippie, IOW DON'T PROVOKE THEM.... this is common sense).... then unless they're tracking you already with a warrent, what cause are they going to have to pull you over?

i honestly dont belive it was just "shrooms" there had to be another cause of the dogs acting up.

also shrooms change vastly (the smell), due to the substrates used and the enviorements grow in. they dont all smell the same.
