1) Yeah. PF-tek is probably the easiest way to go. And B+ teaches you how to be patient.

2) Here's what I do. I remove the lid and the dry verm layer as much as I can. I fill the jar with tap water, put the lid back on and drop in the fridge for 18-22 hours. Then, I remove the cake from the jar and roll it in a big bowl that contains sterile moist vermiculite.

3) Do it before putting it the the terrarium for the first time. You can make it sit on the lid with verm at the bottom and additional verm on top.

Here's the result :

Note that after a couple days sitting in the terrarium, mycelium covers most of the side verm.

If you put the water in the jar, won't only the top of the cake absorb any moisture?

Most of the times the cake shrinks a little bit while colonizing so there is always a little space between substrate and jar.

It's always completely submerged in water and the cake is actually floating in the jar.

Great, thanks. I have some fully colonized cakes and I think I'll try that right now!

Definitely dunk before birthing and in between flushes. I'd use a few drops of hydrogen peroxide in the dunk water. Good luck!

The red balls are geolite. It's similar to perlite, but it's non-reflective and I believe it has a couple of other benefits. You can purchase them at most hydroponics stores.

Ok i have two more simple questions-

*How cold is too cold? My fridge is barley above freezing (32-33F) and the water bottles in the fridge often freeze up. (Stupid ghetto apartment fridge)

*Should i transfer the cakes to a set of clean jars, or just fill water in the jars there colonizing in?

cold shocking cubensis is not needed, only cold climate species need this treatment.so just dunk at room temp for 24 hours then roll them in dry verm, double end case(sit the cake on verm and cover the top with verm also)...mist the whole thing down and put them in your terraruim.
