Yes, that can indeed be the case. A substance-induced psychosis will mimic schizophrenia only in effects and intensity, but not necessarily duration. Generally a substance-induced psychosis will wane down over a period of time even without medication. They are therefore more easily treatable.

Usually schizophrenics will only suffer from hallucinations a few days at a time and delusions up to a month, then it will go away for a while and come back. With a substance-induced psychosis you could have a few days of hallucinations, a month of delusions and after that it may very well subside completely.

Perhaps you misrepresented your symptoms intentionally in order to obtain a schizophrenia diagnosis because you thought it would be "cool" after you listened to some Terence McKenna lectures, and wished to represent yourself as some sort of messiah of the archaic revival. A "mushroom Jesus", if you will.
