No thanks for breaking Quick Reply
    #2184753 - 12/17/03 07:15 AM (21 years, 4 months ago)

:mad:That's right. As usual, coders have no desire to code for anything but godforsaken internet explorer and chose to break things that worked perfectly well for other browsers. Doob's thread locked or I woulda posted there. I agree with Doob, GAY. and I disagree with afoaf, IT DOES NOT WORK JUST FINE! Try using opera to work the quick reply and you get a happy little box telling you that this feature isn't going to work with your browser. So, yeah, I (and i assume others) don't have the option of quick reply anymore. No thanks!

Perhaps a polite post stating that the quick reply changes don't work with the opera web browser version x.xx would get you further than the little tantrum above.  Additional information, beyond "a happy little box...", would also help us determine what the issue is and how to fix it.  Nobody is trying to get rid of quick reply; the motive is to restore threaded discussions.  I don't have a copy of opera, so I cannot test with it.  I did test with IE, firebird, and safari (for apple) and the changes worked fine with all three.  The only changes made were adding about 10 lines of very simple javascript.  If your browser doesn't support javascript, the changes made to quick reply will become transparent.  Again... more information would help debug the issue.

A> I admit my attitude was less than productive, for that I apologise.
B> If you consistently use a non-IE browser then you consistently experience the results of "coder negligence" and it is quite infuriating. What is primarily infuriating is that a working model was broken.
C> I assumed that the happy box bit would be good enough information to the person(s) who wrote the offending code to begin with. Excuse my shortsightedness. BTW, Opera fully implements javascript.

thank you, anno. i?m using Ver 7.11 build 2887. This problem occurs regardless of OS as I?ve experienced it on Gentoo Linux, Win2K and WinXPSP1.

the "happy box" suggests just using QR the old way but that results in:

hey, seuss, i copied this outta the other opera thread as i wasn't trying to hijaak his but was curious if he experienced the same problem i did:

Quote:

Seuss said:Please provide more information about what it is doing, or not doing, so that we can fix the issue. I don't have a copy of opera to test with.

The only changes made to quick reply were:

1) added a variable which gets set when somebody clicks a quick reply link
2) added a single line to existing code to set variable when clicking quick reply
3) added an onClick action to the contineu/preview reply buttons
4) created a function to test variable and display alert if needed

The more info you can give me about what is going on, the quicker I can get it fixed for you.

So that pops up when you click the "Quick Reply" link in the thread rather than the "Continue" button at the bottom? (The message/alert Anno pasted, not the second one.)

debianlinux, the "happy message" stems from the original ubbthreads.
They seemed to have noticeed that the Quick reply button doesn?t work under opera, and added this message.

I think the problem is easy to solve by simply except the opera users from this check or to code the Quick reply button in a way that works under Opera too.

No worries.   I know how frustrating things can get when they don't work right and nobody seems to care.  If you have other problems with opera, please let us know.

One problem I've noticed, which has been making my brain tumor grow, is that sometimes when you've typed out a message prior to clicking 'Quick Reply', it clears the text field and you have to start all over again when you do click it.

that makes sense. imo, learn to hit QR first or copy your text before hitting QR. but let's get this straight: you say SOMETIMES? that is disturbing. of course, i can't test it as i can't fully use the QR function (i'm stuck to using old-school mode)

Try hitting ctrl-z when that happens. I don't know about opera, but on IE that will restore any lost text.

Thanks

Each posts is a part of a thread. Its position within a thread is determined by whom a post was made as a reply to.
No position, no thread, just a bunch of posts.

I imagine more posts are made to a specific person and more seldom to the "group".

Therefore this "new" quick reply is better. In those instances where the reply is directed to the group, start your post with....... To All:

If you read in flat mode, it isn't such a big deal... but if you are a threaded mode user, then quick reply trashes threading which gets very confusing and basically makes threaded view a waste of time.

I think it depends upon which forum you are reading... most posts in Cult/OTD/Pub/Etc are pretty flat where the reply is to the last post made, or the first post. In the forums where you get a lot of ideas going at once, like S&P or Politics, there can be alot of independent threads going at once within a single set of posts.

I view in Flat Mode, but I also see a thread as a collection of sub-dialogs, and therefor, I found Quick Reply to be a pain when it was not used correctly. One of the reasons that I always liked the shroomery, and the fact that it uses UBB.threads, is that I can follow all of the "little conversations" that go on within a thread.

I read in threaded mode on an olympic lifting forum, goheavy.com, but certainly not on the shroomery. It's too messy with so many posts.

Please look at this thread too.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=2187612

You will notice that after my reply about 7/8ths of the way down, bf6 made a post addressed to me, but directed someone who posted above me. Proof that the "fix" to quick reply doesn't work and that the change really is gay afterall.

Please also note how easy it is to read the thread, and use the context of what bf6 said to establish who he is replying to.

If you read in flat mode, it isn't such a big deal... but if you are a threaded mode user, then quick reply trashes threading which gets very confusing and basically makes threaded view a waste of time.

Totaly forgot that threaded mode even existed.

How is this a proof for that? You can always reply to anybody you want.

Make it so that if they don't click quik reply next to a post and just click submit, it submits the post to /dev/nul/.
Half of my posts since the upgrade would be there now if that was how it worked. Probably a good thing.

...because people are still misusing quick reply in the same way they were misusing it before the "fix".

It took me around 3 days to understand how the new Quick Reply works.

It took me 10 months to realize that the Quote button makes an automatic quote. During the last 10 months, I was always manually quoting.

I wonder how many months left I have of being slow minded.

In conclusion, please don't do any improvement on this site just for me because it will take me forever to notice something is new and another forever to understand how it works.

I think that living thing in my head is like feeding on my brain.

YET MORE EVIDENCE THE CHANGE TO QUICK REPLY FIXES NOTHING:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=2204882

Note the second post from the bottom of that thread. It is made by luvdemshrooms who is the biggest advocate for the changes made to quick reply. He goes to tell me how full of crap I am about the changes not making a difference BUT HE MISUSED THE QUICK REPLY! HE REPLIED TO ANNO INSTEAD OF ME LOLOLOL

Now when Anno decides to view the thread in threaded mode, he's gonna think that luvdem was calling him doobie and telling HIM to grow up, because anno is too retarded to realize from the context of the thread that luvdemshrooms was talking to me....

When will the madness end???
