Please..... I don't normally beg, but I will if necessary.....
Kill off the Quick Reply.
It would be one thing to have it if those who use it would only put in the name of whomever the post is directed to.... sadly, few do that leading to confusing (minorly) threads.
I would shed no tears if it vanished, never to re-appear.

I don?t know if you noticed, but there is a button "Quick Reply" in your post. If I use this button, then the correct person is being addressed.

So was this one, I know how to use it just fine.
Unfortunately, most do not.

I guess I see it this way, people seem to use the quick reply because they either don't wish to, or are to lazy to scroll back up to click on reply, or quick reply, next to the user name they are replying to. As a result they just fill in the quick reply field at the bottom, which then by default replies to the previous poster whether or not that is indeed the person they wish to reply to.
You and I, and I'm sure many others know how. Too many do not, leading to "did you mean to reply to me"?.... type questions, and "I never said that" responses.

Why not remove the quick reply box (which I am typing in now) from the bottom of the page and put it in a popout window created when the user clicks 'quick reply'?
Seems to be an easy change... just some javascript... and would fix the problem?

While that would work, if you've taken the time to scroll back up to do so, you could just as easily hit reply.
Just get rid of it altogether.

How about a check box at the quick reply,
"Reply to thread creator" vs "Reply to the last poster".
Or a drop down box of posters on the page.

I disagree, the confusion (such as it is) comes from it not always being clear who the poster is refering to. How would still not knowing who he or she is refering to help to clear it up?
If I was the grand poo-bah, I'd either go with....
1. Bag it, it sucks.
or
2. Why not remove the quick reply box (which I am typing in now) from the bottom of the page and put it in a popout window created when the user clicks 'quick reply'? <<< credit to Seuss. (which would NOT require a new browser window, just a small pop up along the lines of the spell check window)
Now, I understand someone worked hard on this feature and it would work just fine were not most too lazy or stupid to merely put the name of the person they are replying to in the post. The fact remains most do not.

Ahhh... I feel better... here is a nice, simple solution that I coded for the powers that be to consider...
Add the following javascript:
[pre]
var quickReplyMessage=-1
function validQuickReply() { if (quickReplyMessage==-1) {
alert("You must specify the message you wish to respond to by clicking on a Quick Reply link before you can
submit this message."); return(false); } else return(true); }
function quickreply(id) { if (!document.getElementById) { alert("This function doesn't support your browser. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and fill in
the Quick Reply box, or use the normal Reply function"); } else if (navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase().indexOf("opera") != -1) { alert("This function doesn't support your browser. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and fill in
the Quick Reply box, or use the normal Reply function"); } else { obj = document.replier; obj.Parent.value = document.getElementById('number' + id).innerHTML; subject = document.getElementById('subject' + id).innerHTML; if (!pattern.test(subject)) { subject = 'Re: ' + subject; } obj.Subject.value = subject; insertAtCaret(obj.Body, ' '); obj.Body.focus(); quickReplyMessage=id; } }
[/pre]
(The last function already exists, I just added the last line to set the quickReplyMessage tot he passed message id)
And then finally, add the following to the continue/submit buttons:
[pre] type="submit" name="textcont" value="Continue" class="buttons" onClick="return validQuickReply()"/>
[/pre]

Hmmm... I guess pre tags don't work... oh well, you can get the idea from what went through...
This will cause an error message to pop up if somebody tries to submit a 'quick reply' without first clicking on a quick reply link to specify the message that the quick reply is for.

-------------------- You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

I think education is in order. Luvdem bitched at me to quit using it and I did. To be honest I never really noticed the RE: part of the posts before that. I still will use it if I am just adding my .03 to a topic and not responding to anyone in particular though. I think most of the people who do use it improperly just don't know any better.

Now, see that? You just screwed it up yourself! You quoted ME in a reply to a different parent post! Now that "parent post reply notification" is back, I would never have known about it without happening to come back to this thread by chance and the person replied to gets an e-mail quoting something I said!

no, since everyone views in flatmode, the [Re: name] sucks.
No, the [Re: name] is NECCESARY BECAUSE almost everyone views in flat mode.
When I first became a member, I used the default (threaded view) for about 2-3 weeks which gave me a VERY clear understanding of post/thread/parent/child relationships.
After I understood how that works, I switched to flat mode because of ease/speed/comfort in reading posts. However, threaded mode is much easier to follow the heirararchy of the entire thread.
I still find reading in flat mode a bit confusing in some threads and without the [Re: name], nearly impossible at times.
I agree that education is in order, however it's too late to force members to use threaded mode for a period of time long enough to teach them how important it is to keep thread integrity for logistical value and comprehension of replies.
Or is it? (too late)... Yeah, it is for those already registered.
Just dump the damn bottom box already.

"Context clues"?
Gimme a break! Read my previous reply again.
What is it matts? Are you lazy, or just stubborn?
If it were possible to poll just the "thread intellegent" members on whether or not to dump the box, it would be a landslide to "DUMP IT".
