I was on overgrow.com earlier today because a friend of mine informed me that people there thought the shroomery website was down because it was raided by the DEA. I went on to point out that they were full of shit, but anyways, onto my point.


On their messageboard set up, they have this "imediate reply" option, where at the bottom of each thread someone reads, there sits an open chat box that you can just type into and submit as a reply. I found it quite convenient, instead of having to load up a completely new page in order to post a reply.

I have no idea how hard it is to modify/code these sort of things, but this is just a suggestion...

See, this way it is now, the "whole new page" is loaded only when you want to replay to someones post.

If we would do the other way, the content of the "whole new page" would be loaded every time you read a post.

BTW, the option you're speaking of is built into the board software OG uses.. it's a lot more work for our tech admins to work in a feature like that I'd imagine, since they'd be implementing it from scratch.  Not to mention the extra resources it would use as Anno was talking about.

Great idea on the quick reply.  One small confusion that occurs because of the quick reply is that the readers do not know who the post is actually addressed to.  I suggest putting some sort of tag or graphic showing that the post which they are reading is a quick reply.  Nothing fancy but could the post function have a line added where it would add some text to the post like "---quick reply---" at the top of the reply or some shit like that?    Just something to chew on.  Peace :cool:

I think the reason why they don't put more of the options/features from the regular reply to the rapid reply is because then it would just eliminate the reply option entirely.

It kinda diversifies your options.

I know there was probably a lot of work put into adding the quick reply function to the message board, and I appreciate the effort.

However, since it replies to the last post made just before you hit the button, but you think you are replying to the last one made at the time that you last refreshed, it is all too common for someone to use the quick reply to compose a post, hit the button, and find that at least one (and often several, in the faster-moving forums) poster has made a post in the meantime.

I have noticed several misunderstandings that have resulted from this.

I don't want to sound harsh or anything, but in my opinion, those who have difficulty using the time-honored "reply" button shouldn't be coddled to by now having two different ways to goof things up.

I know it hurts to have to discard code that was lovingly and proficiently prepared and implemented, but in this case I suggest it might be better to remove the quick reply addition.

pinky, i actually think this confusion is a good thing.
it's forcing us to go back to the practice of mentioning who we are talking to, as i just did.

i dislike the dependency we have developed for the reply line, because sometimes i'm commenting to the whole thread, not just one person, but i am forced to pick one. if i've already replied i can just reply to myself, but if it's my first post in the thread, no dice.
