Psilocybe cubensis "B+" on straw
    #2183243 - 12/16/03 06:35 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Here we will be casing B+ on straw spawned with WBS.  The straw was lightly boiled for 45min. then allowed to cool.

As soon as it cooled I then place a thin layer of the WBS spawn across the bottom of my pan, just enough to cover the bottom (1/4" or so)

Then with latex gloves on I picked up some straw by the handfull and squeezed all the excess water out until it wouldn't drip anymore.

***Be sure and keep your broth for use in agar  ***
1-TBS dextrose
1.5-TBS agar agar
300ml-Straw broth
Shake the #%*! out of it to mix it up real good, PC at 15psi for 30min allow to cool and for the lid to vacuum seal then keep in the fridge.  (then all you need to do is PC it again to make liquid for pouring your plates)

I spread this evenly about 1/2" - 1" thick then covered this with another 1/4" of spawn.

I then covered this with 1/2" of a mix of the spawn and straw topping it all off with the last of my pint of spawn (again only a 1/4" or so).

This made my substrate right around 2.5" or so.  I covered with foil and poked some holes in it with a toothpick for some gas exchange.

Here it is after 3days of incubation

Then it was cased with 1/4" to 1/2" of coir and covered and incubated for another 3 days.

Gotta love them rizo's

Now for the fruiting cycle!  I cold shocked it in the fridge for 24 hrs. then placed in the fruiting chamber.  Here is the casing after 9 days in the fruiting bin.

Here it is after 11 days

A close up of day 11.

Day 12.

Day 13 harvest day :mushroom2:

Total weight of first flush, 98g fresh, 14g dry

They smell so sweet and mushroomy, the smell is almost intoxicating
I'm very excited to see how they do for me on straw.  Hope this will show me some large fruits that this strain is very capable of producing!

No I didn't take any temp measurments on the straw just kept it lightly boiling

As for the weight they were cracker dry.  The fresh fruits were firm and dense.  I have never had 90% weight loss with any strain I have ever worked with?  I never have understood exactly where people get 90% water content from (I guess it is more of a rough estimate or somthing?).  My experience has always been between 70-80%  I think that this may be attributed to humidity levels or enviroment.  I always hand mist my terrainium and I know the humidity is not optimal but it works and that is all I want   Who needs a fogger anyway :P

I like your minimalist style... too many growers here make cultivation much more difficult than it should be.

I am currently weening towards using a fan and mist system like yours and packing up all my air pumps and perlite and all that.  I just like getting real personal with the mushrooms like that  :tongue2:.

I agree about the foggers and such. I just hand mist with my casing and have no problem at all!

yep, nice work alright  mine always shrink down to about 9-10% of their wet weight, so whatever you're doing, you're doing it well

14g will see you anywhere between two and ten trips, depending on how you like your adventures  :nut: :heartpump:
that'd be three for me (i usually opt for between 4 and 6g - once i had approx 15-20g and severely regretted it) so i reckon you have a good night there for a bunch of friends. any plans?

thank you all for you comments. If you do the math the actual water content was 85.7% so I was not far off from the common 90%  Mostly I stay in the 80percentile though.  This is ideal for those who want a small scale casing tek but can be upgraded to bulk with ease.  I believe layering the spawn in allows the culture to develope a strong foothold very quickly and then rapidly colonize the substrate.  Just my opinion   But here are some GT grown the same way
