Seattle Ps. cyanescens???
    #2178140 - 12/15/03 01:15 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Was working at the University of Washington last week. Didn't go looking for anything the whole week. The day of my flight home (in fact, as I was going out to the car to head to the airport!), I spied these beauties, right on campus.

I couldn't get a spore print, so I can't tell you about that. They were in Seattle, as I said, growing from wood chips in a shaded area. I have no other helpful info; I was literally on my way out and only had a minute to snap a couple of pics.

What do you think? Cyanescens?

o agree that they have a deadly glow, but it could be that the camera needs a color adjustment, i saw one in the top photo that looks good

the deadly galerina...

they are all over campus, and they always make me do a double-take, but not cyans.

the easiest way to tell by first glance is the stem. the stem in cyans is very white. the stem in galerinas are caramel, just like the cap.

they grow in the same environments though, so keep looking!

Not at all mang. Cap color is wrong, and look at those stems... wrong as well

You're looking for white stems that bruise blue. Cyans well *always* bruise blue.

Psilly Girl answsered the question.

Galerina marginata, also in lawns at times and definitely all over the Campus and off the main campus area in other campus places.

Here is a Gathering of Galerina shrooms

These are all over the city also in big quantities and usually are also found in alder bark. They are also common by the hundreds of thousands in clear-cuts as posted last year by me and Roadkill formthe Hood Canal region of the state.

Yeah, I see those all over the place. They make me look twice, but as the others have said, the stem is a dead giveaway. Galerina marginata.

Thanks everyone for the replies and the great info.  I had not been in that area before, and haven't ever seen either of these species in the wild.  Guess I still haven't seen cyanescens, though

No, I didn't pick any, nor did I contemplate eating any--eating an unknown fungus is a sure-fire recipe for disaster.  I was just curious about them.

So, when I next get a chance to visit Seattle (which is a beautiful place, btw), I'll know better what to look for.

Thanks again for the information.....
