which graphics card?
    #2165939 -

I want to upgrade my graphics card (a GeForce 2 GTS) and get something capable of playing half life 2/ doom3/ black&white 2 etc.. I thought of getting a Radeon 9600 but I think i'd be better off with a 9600 Pro. However I have noticed a lot of people have had issues with these cards ([url=http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/8596/?o=0]like this thread has 47 pages) including with games such as homeworld 2, which i was thinking of getting.

So what do people suggest? A 9800 is a bit beyond my price range, and the GeForce cards look shite in comparison. I heard there is a new company called XGI coming into the market next year, so I guess I could wait until these phat games are actually released and see what the situation is like then, but i'm impatient  :crazy2:  Does anyone use a 9600/Pro that works with no problems?

i use the all in wonder 9700p and i really like the card.  I've never had any compatability issues with it.  I hear the 9600 is really nice for the money.  But then agian, the nvidia cards are pretty inexpensive too.  Whatever you decide to go with.  You want it DX9 compatable, and preferably 128MB for future games.
Hope this helps  :syringe:

I have a AIW 9700 Pro too. I did have some problems with the drivers though. They did release some bad drivers and I couldn't play MOHAA or Call of Duty. Other than that, the card is great.

The Radeon 9600 should run halflife and doom really nicely. This card is DirectX9 right?

Dont they have a 9800 now

Edit in:  Yea 128MB is another key to look for  :smirk:

Yeah, 9800 128mb, 9800 256mb, 9800 AIW Pro, 9800 pro 128mb, 9800 pro 256mb, and 9800 XT 256mb. The XT is the top of the line and will cost you about $450. Almost all of the ATI 9XXX series are all DirectX9.

gawd, i wish i could afford one of those shiny new ati cards. i wouldn't go for less than a 9800 pro ( i think there are 9800 you can OC to = pro). problem is, i gotta get 2 cards cuz my wife wouldn't be able to play along with me. i'm just hoping ati/nvidia put out a new "species" that helps lower the price on the existing cards. they should play HL2/Doom3, etc. just fine.

I have a GeForce FX 5700 Ultra ... it works great for Splinter Cell and Max Payne 2, So it should work fine for games like Half-Life 2 and Doom 3.

LOL

Don't waste your money on a 9600 pro. Wait until a little after the games are actually released. Hardware will ride the software wave, big things will happen. Your money will be wasted on a 9600/pro.

Here's a really good article about benchmarks for half-life 2. They were able to test ATI and NVIDIA cards with Valve and they show the results.

NVIDIA are not performing really well but a new set of drivers optimizied for direct X 9 is coming shortly so it should help a lot. Man I hope so cause I bought a GeForge 5600 a couple months ago just for being able to play half-life 2 (yep, it was supposed to be released last september) ..

Have a look...

For those games, you REALLY don't need anything more than a 64, but if you're getting a 128, might as well get a GeForce. They are cheap and you get a pretty nice framerate too.

the 9600xt is 1 of techtv's top 10 gifts this year for christmas! if I didn't already have a 9700 pro thats the card I'd go with.....stay away from the gf fx line...for the money you can't beat the 9600xt
