Upgrading my graphics card - help
    #10846747 -

My old graphics cards are two Radeon 9800 Pros (128MB, not the 256 ones).  I really only need 256, but I figure it appears to be cheap enough where I could afford 512 or 1 gig easily, I just need to make sure it'll work with my somewhat ancient motherboard (5 years old I think).  Don't tell me to just get a new computer, I've maintained this one fine and want to get another 2-3 years out of it.

I ran Aida32 and got some incomplete information on my video card.  All I know is that it's made by MSI and I get a model number of 6702 which doesn't seem to mean anything on their support site. CPU is an unknown AMD 64 3000+ Mhz core, 1 gig ram.

This is what I want to replace the cards with (not using the second atm anyways):

Do you think my motherboard will be able to use it.. not enough info?  Should I just go with the 512 just to be safe?  Is there another way to find out what motherboard I have so I can be sure?  Thanks in advance.

your mobo will need to have pci-express to run new cards, including that one.  i was in the same boat as you running an old model geforce FX and it wasn't worth it nor possible to just upgrade the video card.

not worth the trouble imo.  just build a new pc if you want to upgrade.

We're talking 25 bucks to upgrade to 256MB, so I think I'd do that to extend my computers life another 2-3 more years rather than spend a few hundred bucks that I don't have on an entire new computer.  Even if I risk it not working, gambling 25 bucks is still worth the potential benefit imo. I'd dish out 50 for a gig card though if I had more assurance it'll be compatible.

you could get a 9800 pro 256mb for dirt cheap if that's what you're talking about.  but that card you linked would need a mobo with pci-express so find out if your mobo has that.

i don't know what you do on your computer but if you plan on playing any new games you definitely need to build a new pc.

Ah no, Radeon 9800 is AGP 8X, which must be what I have.  So ya, thanks, I'll pick out another.

Newegg has a no questions return policy it seems, so I can just gamble at the cost of shipping.

EDIT: damn, that doubles the price.

First off, there's no point in mentioning the amount of ram of graphics card has, because there are many other factors in how good a card is, and currently ram means very little when talking about the performance of a card.

You're going to be stuck getting an AGP card.

I'm guessing you're doing this for games?

Whatever you get, the increase in performance will probably not be worth it.

I was going to recommend this card, but if your computer is as old as you say it is, you may need to get a new power supply as well. You should check the watts on it. Not to mention that your CPU (and ram) could also be limiting the performance after your upgrade.

I know you said not to mention this, but anyone who knows anything about computers will tell you to save up and build a computer. It's almost pointless to do the upgrade you're suggesting.

I'd probably go with something more like

256
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500051
512
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121315

I'm not expecting miracles, but I've seen firsthand how a new video card can breathe new life into a system.  A new system simply IS NOT an option for a few years, I know my budget.

I don't play games really, so minimum requirements is fine with me. The number of games available to me is widely expanded going just from 128 to 256.  I know video RAM isn't the only variable, I'm attempting to learn the other variables here.

I'm not worried about power source.  This system was top of the line when it was made and is a real beast.  I'll check the numbers to be sure anyways though.

Make sure you know what your getting.
I have an Nvidia GeForce GTX 285. It a great card and all. Duel DVI and and S-Vid out.

Only problem is you cant do both DVI and S-Video.... On DUEL DVI. I must have read over that or just didnt think about it but I was pissed to find out that it cant do svid and DVI at the same time. MFG wouldnt take the card back even if I spent MORE $$ on an upgraded card.

Like I said, Newegg has a 30 day no questions return policy, which is pretty sweet

I have a 256MB AGP Radeon HD 3450 which is barely used. I got it a few months ago for testing and I don't need it anymore. It's not a fast card but you seem to know that. Send me a postage-paid mailer or $5 for shipping and it's yours.

Yeah except I haven't heard a peep from the guy since the confirmed delivery of the card on the 17th. I even threw in a power splitter and burned the drivers to CD and everything. Gonna have to add him to my ungrateful asshole list, if I can find any room at the bottom. :smirk:

It's marked as delivered on Monday, but I haven't been home in that time.  I'll let you know as soon as I get it and jack it in

(and I believe I said thanks 3 time already )

Tossed it in and it works great.  Afterward, while I had her open, I went ahead and took the whole damn thing apart and air dusted everything (even took the heatsink apart since it was real clogged up) then reorganized the cables.  I even found my missing hard drive

It's running a lot cooler and more silent now and is probably 3 times faster loading certain programs :thumbup:

Did you clean the old TIM off and put new TIM on?  If not, I wouldn't use it until you do.  (TIM = thermal interface material; typically, the gray goo between the heatsink and the chip)

did pci express 2.0 exists 5 years ago?

Damn that would have been the card of my dreams in 2003.
I remember my roommate at the time building a system to run Half Life 2 (which got released like 2 years late.)
He easily spent $1200 on it. I hate the fact that i always want to build new and the stuff i want ( like this video card on sale for $469.00 )will at some point not to long after, be the equivalent of an atari. How long do you think it will be before we have 10000 GHz, 1Tb, 1.5 exobite systems for under $2000?

in 2001 i got a palm pilot for college as a gift, they paid $350. It had a monochrome screen, and 16 Mb internal memory (no expansion port.) That thing wasn't even worth looking at within 18 months. :frown:

Glad you got your problem fixed tho

This system was my grandpa's before he died.  He had been using computers since the 70s and this was basically his dream system.  It probably would have been even better, but he had lost a lot of his faculties those last years (he was in his mid-80s).

I'm hoping the computer I build on my death throws.. I assume in the early 22nd century.. will have like holograms and sensory feedback and shit

porn will be obsolete in the future didn't you hear?  they are going to install rfids with nerve inhibitors in your penors at birth when they do the circumcision, and only after you marry do you get a number that you text on your cellphone to deactivate it($6.99 per text, and roaming fees may apply).  your wife of course gets a number to turn it back on at will :obama:
