Anyone own a physics card yet?

I just found out that there are actually physics cards on the market right now. This surprised me, I figured they were one of those things you see in Popular Science that might happen in a few years, but probably won't.
A link provided in the launcher for city of villians directed me to the website of the AGEIA "PhysX" physics processor unit.
I don't know what to think of this, as of yet.

It's a cool idea, but the Havok engine is adding support for physics acceleration on the GPU without additional hardware. Unless Ageia cuts prices by 75% and gets a ton of developers on board I'm afraid they're going to be an also-ran.

I just read a review of one in Computer Gaming Monthly and the jist of the article said it was best compared to a combination of platypus piss and cricket crap. New, rare and exotic, but ultimately you realize that you were just fed excrement.

the videos are pretty cool... but who knows how well it will be implemented

Yeah what they don't mention is you can run the demos with all the physics effects enabled, without a physics card, and only lose a couple FPS. I'm sure it'll improve with time but for $350 I'd kind of expect shit to actually fly out of my screen and into my computer room.

i think i read somewhere that the new sli video cards setup, one of them will be able to do physics processing, and the other will do the graphics. handy thing to have even if you dont want it

So thus far this seems to be just a novelty, then?
I suppose it will be a while before physics cards have an opportunity to become a worthy investment.
It's neat to see new processor units in their infancy, though. I somehow think this might wind up being akin to how the GPU was born, but I was too young at the time to remember that... and my packard bell craputer didn't exactly have internet access.

Exactly, just novelty. A few games in the near future will support them. But I can't imagine them out performing an decent SLI set up and a extra graphics card would run about the same price. Very useless at this point. Hardware has always been ahead of software, I can't imagine these things having any worthwhile benefit for a long time.
