graphics card driver help.
    #12235407 -

So ever since i switched to Windows 7 i can't watch movies, use Milkdrop in Winamp and a few other things.

I'm guessing i just need to download drivers for the card, but can't seem to find any.

I'm using an ASUS v9280s2 TVD 128m.

If anyone can iether find me a good link to a driver, or help me out if it's not the driver i need, it would be greatly appreciated.

I have looked on the ASUS site, but couldn't even find them there.

That card has an nvidia chip, the "engine" of the graphics card.

Go here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index5.aspx?lang=en-us
and use option 2 to automatically find drivers.

Does that work?

Product: Standard VGA Graphics Adapter

Current Installed Driver: 16.38

Latest Driver Update: Your PC currently has the latest driver installed for your GPU. No driver update is necessary at this time.

WTF??? what now?

yeah it says:
Quote:
MILKDROP ERROR

DirectX instillation failed (GetDeviceCaps)

This means that no valid 3D-accelerated display adapter could be found on your computer.
If you know this is not the case, it is possible that your graphics subsystem is temporarily unstable; please try rebooting your computer, and then try to run the plugin again. Otherwise, please install a 3D-accelarated display adapter.

i have downloaded FFDSHOW codecs

Your video card has a Geforce 4 Ti 4800 graphics chip in it by Nvidia.

Windows 7 requires a video card that has at least direct x 9, geforce 4 only supports direct x 8.1

Your video card is too old for your operating system.

If you need help picking out a new graphics card let me know.

Yes, the card is too old for windows 7.

It's probably best to switch back to XP with such old hardware.

That is an option, or he could go with a newer AGP card.

This graphics card will run your shit like 10x better.

EDIT: Or, if you don't play any video games, you can get something like this.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133312

It will support direct x 9 for Windows 7.

I had a feeling this might be the case. Awesome thanks for those links man. I'm planning on building a new computer in the near future, so would the card in the link be good for this, and my new system?

Probably not as the card in the link is an AGP. The current standard is PCI-E.

if you need an AGP video card you might as well wait till you build a new machine.

none of the new mobos will have AGP support. everything is PCI-E now.

the way ive always built computers is to buy the cpu or mobo first and get the rest of the parts piece by piece. you wont feel so bad dropping $1500 on a new machine if its not all at once.

Thanks so much everyone for your help.

So lets just say if i do buy a cheaper one now, and i'm looking at this list: http://www.cpl.net.au/greenguide/20100318-1.pdf what would be the best one to get, keeping in mind that i will be building a new computer and will replace this card soon anyway.

As others said, you need a AGP card while PCI-e has been the standard for a few years now. Most new cards will therefore not fit on your motherboard, unless you have a PCI-e slot. AGP cards are more expensive nowadays. That list only has two AGP cards, for $115 and $150. That's not worth it.

I would go back to win XP until you have a new computer.

If you REALLY want to use Windows 7 until you get a new system built get this.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133312

Video cards are graphics processors, if you aren't processing crazy high end graphics like on a new, demanding game, then there is no reason to buy a top of the line graphics card.

The lower end models have all the features you need for watching dvd's, and unless you are playing a game you could tell no difference between an expensive graphics card and a cheap one while doing tasks such as browsing the internet or watching media.

The people who posted above are all correct.

You could revert to XP, or buy a cheapo graphics card that will do you just fine since you don't even play video games.

Alright I found this card on ebay and it's only $40, i can justify throwing $40 down the drain until i build my new machine.

This will fix my problem yeah?
