What is the deal with video card prices?

I'm building a new computer and may get a decent graphics card as they aren't that expensive (something like 70$ or less would be more than sufficient for me for many years it seems).

While more than I was going to pay, the performance jumps up so quick I may go for about 60-70$.


One thing I don't get.... People are selling these things for like 30-60$ more on ebay than what you can buy on newegg.  Some of these cards are actually used and still cost more than the new cards by like 30% or more at times.  I realize newegg's got volume discounts but the used prices demanded are what really gets me, these shouldn't be $40  more than you can get for the card new and with a warranty, surely.

So what is going on here?

btw, the card is not the ATI or NVIDIA spec right?  It is some third party that actually makes the thing and you should compare that model number, correct?  So the ATI or NVIDIA thing is just a chip or something and the product is the total card which is what you should compare?

No, comparing the chip is more useful.  The card manufacturer just solders the chip to the memory and bracket etc.  The chip type and memory specs are more important than the card manufacturer.

Ive always found NewEgg to me a little cheaper than ebay for new stuff, but not to the extent you saw.  Maybe if you posted what you saw we could figure out what the catch is.

Oh yeah, I mean with the same chip comparing the manufacturer's number on different sites.  So like here's an example:

the number I reffered to was 100248L  (comments on this are welcome too, just know this is more than I need anyways, and I'm not interested in going much over this price point) 

Actually I figured some of it out.  Some were AGP slot items and Seuss told me earlier that often the older tech is more expensive, so maybe that's the deal with those?  But these on this page don't apply to that as they are all PCI-E

I don't know if this is the same, but looks like it but with a different case...


And there are loads more like the last one if you look.  Different cases/fan it looks like, but same specs... I think? 


The used ones of the last type are going more for the new egg one...  Looks different, but what is the difference justifying 150% the price for a used item?


Also, 2.0 pci-e should work in any pci-e slot right?  I'm confused, but I believe this card is supposed to and pci-e 2.0 devices are supposed to be backwards compatible with any pci-e slot?

Heh, video cards a ridiculous here.
I saw sapphire radeon 9250, yes these assholes are still selling this no longer supported card for NZD$89 - same price as an NVIDIA 7600gs, pay $40 more and you can get a 8800gt... but top range stuff is like $250 and up. I've yet to see any correlation in stores between AGP being more expensive though.
