humidity and perlite
    #2154232 - 12/03/03 08:41 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

my fruiting chamber uses perlite for humidification. the perlite is moist to the point where any more water would cause my cakes to fall down due to displacement. my chamber contains two holes in the top about the size of a dime for gas release from an air pump. i have no hygrometer and therefore would like some advice. does anyone have any experience with a setup smiliar to this? if so, do you believe that my humidity levels will be suitable? thankyou.

I think you have a lil too much water in there....you only want approx 25% of the perlite sitting in water otherwise it won't wick properly

i dont remember what wick means, but hes saying if you have an inch of perlite, put a quarter inch of water in there. That gets the humidity you want.

wick means suck up the water, if you have too much water then the perlite will suck up all the water it can but then there will still be excess water that the perlite can't suck up. this isn't what you want. put your water in the terrarium 1st then put the perlite over the top of the water. just make sure all the water is covered up.

Another way my friend does it is puts all the perlite in a kitchen strainer and pour water all over it and let the water drain out, and then put that in the terrarium. This works well and keeps his humidity at 99% very well.

awesome. i am also concerned about the air release holes on the top of my fruiting chamber. 2 eat at each end approximately the size of a dime. does this seem to be the correct size? thanks.

My friend usualy has ? inch of water to every inch of perlite and it works fine, to make sure you have good humidity check for condensation on the walls and top to know its right. Also you may need to just fan the chamber out, I don't know if those holes will provide enough for proper CO2 exchange.

That'll be fine. All you have to do is just make sure you fan twice a day, maybe 3 times a day if you can.
Get rid of some of the water, which Im sure youve done already. Dont fret too much about what the humidity is like, just make sure you fan or whatever to get all that stagnant air that builds up.
